23 1 "The Return" J. Miller Tobin Kevin Williamson & Julie Plec September 9, 2010 (2010-09-09) 3.36[5]
Picking up where the first season left off, Elena arrives home to discover Uncle John's and Jeremy's fates. At the hospital, Sheriff Forbes waits to hear if Caroline will survive the car accident. Damon, Bonnie, and Elena agree that Caroline needs some of Damon's blood in her system to make sure she pulls through. Stefan is the first to realize that Katherine has returned and is now impersonating Elena. At the Lockwood house, Bonnie meets Katherine and a short fight ensues; Stefan breaks it up. Both Stefan and Damon try to find out what Katherine wants, why she's back, and how much of a threat she is to the people they love. Tyler is surprised when his uncle, Mason Lockwood, arrives in town to console him. Katherine and Damon nearly sleep together, but Katherine tells Damon that she never loved him and that she had always loved Stefan. Distraught, Damon goes to see Elena, who resists his attempt to kiss her. Angry that Elena also loves Stefan, Damon snaps Jeremy's neck to get back at her. Jeremy survives because he is wearing John's ring, which protects him from death from supernatural forces. Katherine later goes to the hospital to see Caroline, who mistakes her for Elena, and uses a pillow to smother Caroline. Before Caroline dies, Katherine introduces herself and tells Caroline to deliver a message to the Salvatore brothers - "Game on".
24 2 "Brave New World" John Dahl Brian Young September 16, 2010 (2010-09-16) 3.01[6]
Caroline, a newly-turned vampire, awakens in the hospital craving blood and she quickly begins to realize what she is. Mason quizzes Tyler about his bursts of anger. Elena and Stefan try to lead normal lives, unaware of Caroline's transformation. Jeremy confronts Damon about attempting to kill him the night before. Tyler catches Mason searching for a family heirloom, a moonstone, which Mason claims he wants for sentimental value. At the carnival, Damon compels a boy named Carter into picking a fight with Tyler to provoke Tyler's bursts of anger. Mason intervenes and breaks up the fight using his abilities, proving that he is indeed a werewolf. Caroline arrives from the hospital to confront Damon for his abusive treatment of her and she forcibly lifts and throws him to the floor. After this he realizes that she has been turned into one of of the undead. He alerts Elena and Stefan as a ravenous Caroline attacks and drains Carter. Damon wants to kill Caroline, but Elena and Stefan refuse to let him. Stefan promises Caroline he will guide her through the vampiric journey. The vampire-hating Bonnie is horrified to learn what has become of Caroline, and what she did to Carter. This causes Bonnie to lash out at Damon, blaming him for all the misery that has occurred in Mystic Falls. She also almost kills him but is stopped by Elena. Tyler confronts Mason back at home, but Mason denies anything happened. This leads Tyler to take matters into his own hands; he retrieves the moonstone which Mason has been seeking. Matt notices Caroline's erratic behavior, but admits that he loves her.
25 3 "Bad Moon Rising" Patrick Norris Andrew Chambliss September 23, 2010 (2010-09-23) 3.57[7]
Elena, Damon, and Alaric head to Isobel's old office at Duke University to do research on Katherine and the Lockwood family secret; they encounter Isobel's research assistant, Vanessa, who helps them locate information on werewolves and their relationship to vampires. It is revealed that vampires and werewolves used to roam freely until a shaman placed a curse on them which limited their powers and their ability to cause havoc: the werewolves were from then one servants to the Moon and vampires became the slaves of the sun. Stefan stays behind to help Caroline adjust to life as a vampire; he teaches her how to control herself and hunt animals, and has a reluctant Bonnie make Caroline a daylight ring. Meanwhile, Mason's plan to restrain himself during the full moon hits a snag, leading him to roam free as a werewolf, and come into contact with both Stefan and Caroline. Tyler saves them by shouting at the werewolf, causing it to run away; he later finds Mason in the woods, naked and covered in dirt, and connects the dots. Caroline cannot control herself while making out with Matt and ends up feeding on him. She compels him to forget about it, but later ends their relationship so that he will be safe from her. Damon gives Elena Katherine's real name- Katerina Petrova- to aid in her research; Elena grudgingly begins to forgive him for hurting Jeremy. Alaric reaffirms his romantic interest in Jenna. Caroline awakens to find Katherine in her bedroom.
26 4 "Memory Lane" Rob Hardy Caroline Dries September 30, 2010 (2010-09-30) 3.18[8]
Stefan and Elena are left without options after Katherine delivers an ultimatum. Katherine tells Stefan that she will kill Elena and everyone in her life unless he ends his relationship with her, but Stefan refuses. Katherine tells Stefan that she has been drinking a bit of vervain for the last 145 years and has developed an immunity to it. Meanwhile Caroline, out of fear of Katherine and under her orders, tries to break up Elena and Stefan; Elena is angry when she realizes that Caroline is working for Katherine. Katherine escapes Stefan's grasp and stabs him when Elena turns up at the house. Elena and Katherine finally meet, but Katherine ignores Elena's questions. Throughout the episode Damon, attempting to prove that Mason is a werewolf, tries to get Mason to touch anything silver. Mason realizes this and decides to call a truce. They shake hands, but Damon has other plans. Damon corners Mason in the parking lot and stabs him with a silver knife, which backfires when Mason says that silver hurting werewolves is only a myth and that they are now enemies. As she watches the full moon rise, Katherine remembers what happened back in 1864, after Stefan and Damon had both been shot in an attempt to save her. She had gone to Stefan and kissed him, declaring her love for him and saying they will be together again one day. Stefan and Elena decide to pretend that they are no longer dating in order to prevent Katherine from hurting anybody. They pretend to break up within earshot of both Caroline and Damon.
27 5 "Kill or Be Killed" Jeff Woolnough Mike Daniels October 7, 2010 (2010-10-07) 3.47[9]
Elena and Stefan continue their fighting facade. At the Mystic Falls picnic, Mason Lockwood tells Liz, the sheriff, that Stefan and Damon are vampires. Though disbelieving at first, Liz finally proves it by spiking Damon's cup of lemonade with vervain, which causes him to choke after taking a sip. Next, Stefan and Damon are set up and shot by Liz and her fellow police officers. Meanwhile, Caroline listens and fills Elena in. They have a short run-in with Mason, during which Caroline fights him off easily. They reach the Salvatores just in time before Liz kills them; however, Caroline's identity as a vampire is exposed to her mother. Liz rejects Caroline as her daughter and Stefan drinks Elena's blood for strength. Caroline confesses to Elena that Katherine threatened to kill Matt if Caroline didn't spy on Elena and Stefan for her; Elena admits that she had been furious to learn that Caroline was spying for Katherine, but forgives Caroline. Tyler almost kills a girl by accidentally pushing her down the stairs. After this incident, he gives up the moonstone to Mason. At the end of the episode, it is revealed that Mason is working for Katherine, who wants the moonstone, and that they are lovers.
28 6 "Plan B" John Behring Elizabeth Craft & Sarah Fain October 21, 2010 (2010-10-21) 3.62[10]
Elena and Stefan wake up together in her bed and frolic around, while the camera splits between them and Katherine and Mason, who are also making out in a bed elsewhere. Jeremy goes to see Damon and offers to help get rid of Katherine. Preparations are underway for the masquerade ball at the Lockwood mansion and Damon and Stefan ask Bonnie to help them apprehend Mason. Caroline tries to bond with her mother; though Liz comes to accept Caroline and swears that she'll keep her secret, Caroline compels her mother to forget that she is a vampire. Bonnie agrees to help the Salvatores and incapacitates Mason by giving him an aneurysm; he is then taken to the Salvatore house and questioned by Damon and Jeremy. Damon tortures Mason, much to Jeremy's discomfort and protests, and demands that Mason tell him what Katherine's plans are. Mason believes that Katherine really loves him and refuses to talk. Damon tells Mason that Katherine is using him just as she had used Damon, and he eventually kills Mason. Bonnie has a vision of the moonstone's location; it is seen that the moonstone has been hidden in a well by Mason. Stefan searches for it but quickly discovers the well is full of vervain; as the vervain burns him, he screams for help. Caroline and Bonnie arrive and help Elena to rescue Stefan and retrieve the moonstone. Damon tells Katherine of Mason's death, saying that Mason had loved her but apparently had not trusted her with the moonstone, since he had hidden it in the well with vervain. Jenna is found to have been compelled by Katherine and is forced to stab herself as Katherine taunts Elena via a phone call. Elena, shaken by Jenna's injury and fearful of what Katherine might do to her family, decides to break up with Stefan for good. Needing another werewolf, Katherine compels Matt to attack Tyler, so that Tyler will kill Matt and become a werewolf.
29 7 "Masquerade" Charles Beeson Kevin Williamson & Julie Plec October 28, 2010 (2010-10-28) 3.55[11]
Stefan, Damon, Bonnie, Jeremy, Alaric, and Caroline team up and form a plan to kill Katherine at the masquerade ball. Jenna returns home from the hospital, and Alaric agrees to keep an eye on Elena while the others carry out their plan. Katherine is visited by a witch named Lucy, who is to help her retrieve the moonstone from Stefan and Damon. At the ball, Katherine pretends to be Elena and threatens to kill party-goers if she doesn't get the moonstone. Bonnie intuitively realizes that Lucy is a witch. Matt, Tyler, and a girl named Sarah are drinking and partying in a room at the ball when Matt - under Katherine's compulsion - begins taunting Tyler about his father and tries to fight him. Caroline hears them and breaks up the fight, but Sarah - who is also being compelled - stabs Tyler with a knife, and he accidentally slams her into a desk, breaking her neck. While Caroline checks on Sarah's pulse, Tyler's eyes turn yellow, showing that the curse has been triggered. Stefan and Damon trap Katherine in a room that Bonnie has spelled to prevent Katherine from leaving it. Meanwhile, Elena becomes suspicious and goes to the ball to investigate. Jeremy and Bonnie tell her what's going on. Stefan and Damon try to kill Katherine, staking her several times, but stop when Jeremy comes running and tells them that every time they stake her, Elena is severely wounded too. Katherine reveals that she had Lucy put a spell on her and Elena, linking them together. Bonnie confronts Lucy and demands that she lift the Katherine/Elena spell. Lucy, who reveals herself to be Bonnie's cousin, lifts the spell and incapacitates Katherine, who collapses. Elena recovers from her wounds but refuses to get back with Stefan, saying she wants to feel that she and her family are safe first. Damon traps Katherine in the underground tomb. Before he seals the tomb, she pleads with him, saying that Elena is in danger, but he walks away. As Elena heads home, she is intercepted by a masked stranger, who grabs her and covers her mouth while she screams.
30 8 "Rose" Liz Friedlander Brian Young November 4, 2010 (2010-11-04) 3.63[12]
Jeremy realizes Elena didn't come home the previous night and informs Stefan. Elena, still weak from her injuries, is taken to a large, abandoned house by her captor, a vampire named Trevor, and meets another vampire named Rose. At school, Tyler deals with the aftermath of Sarah's death. When Tyler witnesses Caroline's super strength abilities, he attempts to get her to tell him what she knows about his own abilities, and she eventually reveals that she is a vampire, but she doesn't tell him about Stefan and Damon and swears Tyler to secrecy. Meanwhile, Elena overhears Rose and Trevor arguing about a vampire named Elijah and whether or not to go through with a plan. Using Jeremy's blood and a spell, Bonnie locates Elena, 300 miles away. Stefan and Damon set off to find her. At the house, Elena tries to get information out of Rose, who tells her Elijah is one of 'the original' vampires, and that she and Trevor are using Elena, a Petrova doppelganger and the key to breaking the curse, as a bargaining position. Trevor reveals that he is the one who helped Katherine escape the originals, and he and Rose have been running from the originals ever since. Elijah arrives, and Rose offers him Elena in exchange for their pardon. Elijah agrees, but kills Trevor, to Rose's grief. Elena tries to stall Elijah, saying she knows where the moonstone is, but he rips off her vervain necklace and compels her to tell him its and Katherine's location. Stefan and Damon arrive, fight with Elijah and stake him. Rose finds Stefan and tells him the originals will come for Elena, that they are doing it for Klaus. Elena returns home and is reunited with Bonnie and Jeremy. Later, Damon comes to her room with her vervain necklace. Before he gives it back, he tells Elena he loves her and that he doesn't deserve her, but Stefan does. He compels Elena to forget what he said and leaves. Back in the abandoned house, Elijah slowly pulls the wooden stake out of his chest.
31 9 "Katerina" J. Miller Tobin Andrew Chambliss November 11, 2010 (2010-11-11) 3.50[13]
The episode begins in Bulgaria in 1490 and shows Katherine, surrounded by her family, giving birth to a baby girl. She asks to hold the baby but her father says that Katherine has shamed their family enough and takes the baby away, leaving Katherine sobbing. Present day, Elena goes to the tomb, where she offers Katherine a bottle of blood in exchange for the truth - a dopplegänger from the Petrova line can be used to break the curse. Elena, as Katherine's descendant, is the current Petrova dopplegänger. Katherine reveals that she was kicked out of Bulgaria and fled to England; she assimilated into English society, where Elijah and Trevor found her. They recognized her as a Petrova dopplegänger and Elijah tried to kill her, but Trevor - who had fallen in love with her - helped her escape. She became a vampire so that she couldn't be used to break the curse. Katherine came back to Mystic Falls to offer Klaus what he needed to break the curse: the current dopplegänger (Elena), a witch (Bonnie), a werewolf (first Mason, then Tyler), a vampire (Caroline), and the moonstone. She hoped that in exchange, Klaus would spare her life. Then Katherine reveals that Klaus killed her father, mother, and sister to get back at her for running away. Meanwhile Bonnie meets a warlock named Luca and his father, and Jeremy is jealous of Bonnie's attraction to Luca. Damon and Rose go to get more information about Klaus from Rose's vampire friend, Slater, but they are overheard by a fully healed Elijah. Damon and Rose sleep together, and at the end of the episode Elijah compels Slater to stake himself. It is revealed that Luca and his father are working for Elijah.
32 10 "The Sacrifice" Ralph Hemecker Caroline Dries December 2, 2010 (2010-12-02) 3.46[14]
Stefan and Damon plot to get the moonstone from Katherine so they can lift the curse. Elena asks Rose to take her to Slater so they can learn more about Klaus and where to find him. Instead, they find Slater's staked corpse in his house. Elena uses information from his computer to get Klaus's attention, saying that she, the doppelganger, is willing to surrender. Rose protests, but Elena insists that surrendering is the only way to protect the people she loves from Klaus. Meanwhile, Caroline and Tyler discuss the approaching full moon and explore the underground tomb on the old Lockwood family property. They discover Mason's journal and the video diary that he had used to document his extremely painful transformations. Bonnie forms a plan to lift the spell from the tomb and temporarily incapacitate Katherine so that Stefan can quickly grab the moonstone, but Jeremy goes ahead with the plan by himself and is captured and fed on by Katherine. He manages to toss the moonstone out of the tomb. Stefan arrives and pushes Jeremy out safely, but is trapped in it himself. Later, Jeremy and Bonnie almost kiss. Damon arrives at Slater's house and tells Elena that he will not let her surrender to Klaus or put herself in danger. Three unnamed vampires confront Damon, Rose, and Elena. Elijah shows up killing one and Rose flees. The remaining two vampires want to take Elena to Klaus, but Elijah kills them too and leaves Damon and Elena unharmed. They return to Mystic Falls; Elena tries to run to Stefan in the tomb, but Damon restrains her. Stefan makes Damon promise to protect Elena, and he agrees. Elijah and Luca's father discuss what had happened at Slater's house. Elijah states that he spared Damon because he could see that both Damon and Stefan would protect Elena, which is what Elijah has been trying to do.
33 11 "By the Light of the Moon" Elizabeth Allen Mike Daniels December 9, 2010 (2010-12-09) 3.16[15]
As the full moon approaches, Caroline helps Tyler prepare for his painful transformation; she stays with him until forced to leave when he tries to attack her. In the tomb, Katherine taunts Stefan over his insecurities about Elena. In response to Katherine's insistence of her love for him, Stefan asks her to prove that there is some good in her, and she grudgingly advises him to ask Isobel, Elena's mother, for help in finding Klaus. Bonnie later seeks Luca's help to destroy the moonstone; they cast a spell that appears to work, but it is revealed that Luca tricked Bonnie when he hands the moonstone, still intact, over to his father on Elijah's orders. Jules, a friend of Mason's, arrives in Mystic Falls looking for him after Tyler leaves a message on Mason's voicemail. A suspicious Damon and Alaric try to trick her into having a drink mixed with wolfsbane; she is provoked into revealing she is a werewolf, and threateningly tells Damon he has been marked. Elijah, who reveals that he no longer works for Klaus, arrives at the house and makes a deal with Elena: she has to keep herself safe from Klaus (so that Elijah can eventually use her as bait to kill Klaus) and in return, Elijah will protect her friends and family and free Stefan from the tomb. As Stefan exits the tomb with Elijah, Katherine begs him not to leave her there, but he walks away and is happily reunited with Elena. Caroline reunites with Tyler, holding him as he cries about the trauma of the night before. He never got out of the enclosure. Damon and Rose talk at the Salvatore mansion; Jules, in wolf form, attacks them and bites Rose's shoulder. Though the wound appears to heal at first, Rose's shoulder becomes infected - a werewolf bite is fatal to a vampire.
34 12 "The Descent" Marcos Siega Elizabeth Craft & Sarah Fain January 27, 2011 (2011-01-27) 3.55[16]
Stefan has his own ideas about Elena’s new plan for the future. He tries to contact Isobel and gets in touch with John Gilbert who comes home in the end. While Damon tries to get the truth of how to cure a wolf bite out of Jules, he asks Elena to keep an eye on Rose, a situation that turns unexpectedly dangerous, almost fatal to Elena when Rose mistakes her for Katherine. Although Rose struggles to cope, she wishes she were back home with her friends and family, "being" human again. Caroline and Matt try to be honest about their feelings for one another. They both confess their love for the other. Tyler’s reaction to Caroline's generosity comes as a surprise to her. Meanwhile, Rose escapes from the Salvatore house and kills three people before Damon and Elena are able to find her. Damon carries Rose back to his room where she gets worse and is in more pain. Rose tells Elena that Damon wants to care, but when he does he runs away from it. Damon intervenes in Rose's dream placing her back in her homeland as a human. In Rose's dream, she reminds Damon that he built a life for himself while she spent the last 500 years just existing. Rose asks Damon if she'll see her family again and he says he thinks she'll see whoever she wants to see. Rose says that would be nice and maybe she'll see Trevor, too. She tells Damon she's not afraid anymore. Hearing that she is not afraid anymore, Damon prepares to stake her. As Rose counts down to a race, Damon, while crying, stakes her, giving her a peaceful death. Damon admits to Elena that he knows she is his friend and that he does feel because he was supposed to have died. Elena realizes he feels guilty, but Damon says that would be human of him, and he's not. He tells her to go home, but before she does she hugs him as he struggles not to cry. He confesses to a stranger on the road named Jessica, who is compelled "not to move", that his big secret is that he misses being human. He struggles with the dilemma of whether to bite her or not. He lets her go, but bites her soon after. Tyler meets Jules at the Grill, where she informs him that she knows he and Mason are werewolves; Mason is dead and that Caroline and her vampire friends were behind it. Tyler disagrees and she tells him there are more werewolves out there and they're on their way.
35 13 "Daddy Issues" Joshua Butler Kevin Williamson & Julie Plec February 3, 2011 (2011-02-03) 3.22[17]
Tyler questions Caroline about Mason's death and is infuriated that she kept Mason's death a secret from him. Jenna becomes upset over the revelation that John is Elena's biological father. Jules meets her wolf-lover Brady in the woods and tells him she wants to take Tyler with them and leave town. Caroline asks Stefan to try and reason with Tyler, while Jules takes Caroline hostage. Jules calls Stefan and tells him to bring Tyler to her in exchange for Caroline. Stefan calls Elena to inform Damon of the situation and tells John to make sure Elena doesn't get involved. Damon and Stefan both approach Jules with Tyler. Stefan tries to make peace, but when that fails Damon offers his "bloodier" method. Jules then calls on her wolf friends and although Damon and Stefan are outnumbered, they still manage to kill most of the wolves. Tyler hesitantly releases Caroline from the cage, but watches as Jules has Caroline at gunpoint. As Stefan and Damon are about to get staked, Jonas, on Elijah's behalf, shows up and incapacitates Jules and Brady and gives Tyler a message: "Tell your friends to get the hell out of this town." Tyler tries to apologize to Caroline, but she furiously declines and tells him they are no longer friends. Tyler goes back to Jules and Brady and informs them that Mason was probably killed because he found the moonstone. Brady asks Tyler the location of the moonstone, and tells him he has no idea. Damon tries to see why John Gilbert has returned and John tells him he is here to protect Elena. John reveals to Damon that the only way to kill an Original is with a dagger dipped in white ash wood that dates back to the beginning of the Originals. It is shown at the end that John is still working with Katherine and trying to get her out of the tomb.
36 14 "Crying Wolf" David Von Ancken Brian Young February 10, 2011 (2011-02-10) 2.78[18]
Stefan and Elena decide to spend a weekend at the old Gilbert family lakehouse, unaware that they've been followed by Tyler and Brady. Jenna starts to worry that Alaric isn't being honest about his past with her. Jules and Brady explain the significance of the sun and moon curse to Tyler but fail to tell him about the sacrificial role of Elena in it and lure him into helping them if he wants to stop transforming. Damon meets Elijah at the Historical Society Tea Party in order to resolve some questions about the original vampires and a sacrifice of the doppelgänger, but Elijah stabs him in the neck with a wooden pencil and tells him once he is of no use to him, he will kill him. Bonnie seeks the help of Caroline and Jeremy to perform a hypnosis spell on Luka in order to get information about the Originals and him and his father's relationship with Elijah. Luka reveals Elijah plans to kill Klaus by making him vulnerable after sacrificing Elena. He also reveals that Klaus has his sister and they want him dead, which is why they are working for Elijah. Jules with the help of her other werewolf friends torture Damon at his house for information about the moonstone, but Elijah intervenes, killing all the werewolves while Jules escapes in the confrontation. Brady, with the help of Tyler, finds Stefan and shoots him with a wooden bullet. Brady leaves Stefan with Tyler as he goes to find Elena. Stefan then tells Tyler he doesn't want to break the curse because Elena would have to die. Tyler has a change of heart and frees Stefan, who kills Brady in order to save Elena. Meanwhile, Jeremy and Bonnie confess their feelings for the other, and share a kiss. Stefan figures out that Elena knew about Elijah's real plan for her, telling her she's being a martyr and not heroic. Tyler, before leaving town with Jules, meets Matt and tells him that he has feelings for Caroline but he knows that Caroline loves him. He tells Matt to take care of her. The episode ends with Jules and Tyler leaving town.
37 15 "The Dinner Party" Marcos Siega Andrew Chambliss February 17, 2011 (2011-02-17) 3.07[19]
The episode begins with Elena reading one of Jonathan Gilbert's journals. Jonathan recounts a night Stefan attacked him (Jonathan wore a ring to protect himself) and killed two of the Fells. After that Stefan tells her the whole story himself. When he first turned, he was brutal and inhuman until Lexi showed him the path of love and humanity after which he fought for his life. Stefan asks Elena the same, to fight for her life and not to give up. Damon invites Elijah over to the boardinghouse for a dinner party with the intent of killing him. Elijah warns Damon that if he has any "dishonarable intentions", he will kill him and everyone in the house. Jonathan Gilbert's journal reveals that if a vampire uses the dagger to kill an Original, both will die; it becomes clear that John helped Damon with the dagger so that he could also die with Elijah. Stefan calls to warn Damon and Alaric answers the phone. Alaric then writes on paper to Damon that the dagger will kill him if he uses it. While Elijah is seated at the dinner table, Alaric sneaks up behind him and stabs him with the dagger, killing him. They then drag his body to the basement, but later find that he is gone; Elena had read in the journal that the dagger must not be removed or the Original will come back to life. Elijah goes to Jonas and asks him to find Elena at the moment. Jonas seems to realize the witchcraft of Bonnie on his son, he goes to Elena's house where Jeremy was helping Bonnie to enhance her channeling ability. In anger, he takes away her powers and threatens her that "she'll answer to him if any harm comes to his son". John blackmails Alaric into giving him his ring back once Jenna starts asking Alaric questions about Isobel. Elijah shows up at the lake house telling Elena that the deal is off, and even though he has not been invited in, he's very patient and will wait them out. Elena tells Elijah that if they don't renegotiate, she'll stab herself with a knife, have Stefan give her his blood, and then kill herself like Katherine did, becoming a vampire and of no use to him. Elijah calls her out on a bluff, but Elena stabs herself, meaning she wasn't. Elijah gives his word to Elena and begs her to let him heal her. She staggers into Elijah's arms and stabs him with the dagger, killing him again. Damon moves from behind the wall and Stefan quickly rushes to Elena's aid. Elijah's body is dragged down to the basement like before. Elena tells both Damon and Stefan that she'll fight, but they need to start doing things her way to which they agree. Damon comes back to find Katherine in his shower. Elijah's compulsion on her has worn off with his death, and she says she's going to stay to help them.
38 16 "The House Guest" Michael Katleman Caroline Dries February 24, 2011 (2011-02-24) 2.98[20]
Elena finds out that Katherine is free from the tomb and is upset. Damon asks Katherine if she knew that killing Elijah with the dagger would also kill him; Katherine says she knew, but wanted her freedom more. Stefan and Bonnie try to persuade Jonas and Luka to work with them; however Jonas wants Elijah alive again. He performs a ritual with Luka, which puts Luka in the boardinghouse in invisible form (his true body remains with his father). Jonas asks him to remove the dagger from Elijah's body. When Luka tries to do that, Katherine shows up and stops him. Jonas then orders Luka to kill her; a confused Katherine then gets staked and she screams for Damon. Damon runs to Katherine to pull out the stake, and not knowing about the presence of Luka, uses a flamethrower to prevent the removal of the dagger. This results in Luka's body getting fatally burned back in Jonas' house and he dies. Stefan realizes it was an act of Jonas and goes to his house to make peace, but an angry Jonas blames Stefan and Damon for his dead son and wants revenge. He disables Stefan and leaves the house to kill Elena. Katherine tells Damon how she made a deal with John Gilbert so that Damon would die instead of Stefan. In the grill, Caroline sings a song for Matt to get his attention; he is flattered by her act and kisses her. Bonnie tells Elena about her relationship with Jeremy and is surprised by her positive response. Jonas shows up at the grill and brings on a massacre by exploding all the lights and setting a fire. Bonnie tries to stop him, but he disables her; Matt tries to help Bonnie and then Caroline, but Jonas stabs him in the neck with a broken bottle. Caroline sees Matt dying and forces him to drink her blood to save his life. Elena goes upstairs in her house to the bathroom where Jonas attacks her, but it is actually Katherine and she bites him; it was part of a plan to save Elena. Bonnie tells the others that it wasn't necessary to kill him. She then reaches out to close his eyes, but Jonas seemingly attacks her, which results in Stefan breaking his neck. Alaric tells Jenna that he loves her, and that there are things about the death of Isobel that aren't his to tell. Jeremy tries to comfort Bonnie for losing her powers, but Bonnie tells him that Jonas didn't attack her; he returned her powers and told her how to kill Klaus. Katherine asks Damon where the site of the "witch massacre" is, but he refuses to tell her anything since he still doesn't believe that she wants to help them. Matt awakes and remembers what happened, and Caroline tells him that she's a vampire. Matt panics and accuses her for the death of Vicki and runs away from Caroline. In the end, Isobel shows up at Elena's house and tells Jenna that she is Elena's mother, but Jenna only realizes who she is when Elena says her name.
39 17 "Know Thy Enemy" Wendey Stanzler Mike Daniels April 7, 2011 (2011-04-07) 2.73[21]
Elena and Alaric become angry with John when Isobel's unexpected arrival devastates Jenna; Alaric punches John as a result. Alaric meets up with Isobel. She tells him she just wants to apologize and that she did love him. After saying this, Alaric is overpowered and abducted by a warlock from Klaus' inner circle named Maddox. Meanwhile, Bonnie works with Jeremy and Damon in order to find the spell they will need to gather the power of the witches killed in the massacre. Damon takes them to the site where the witches were burned. Damon knew where it was because he had tried to save Emily. Inside the house Damon finds that he cannot move. His ring then stops working and he begins to burn. He tells Bonnie to help and she closes her eyes and starts muttering a spell. Bonnie tells him that she doesn't think that the witches like him being there. Elsewhere, Caroline is heartbroken and doesn't know what to do about Matt. Matt is waiting at Caroline's house when she arrives back home. He demands that she tell him what happened to Vicki. After Caroline has told him, he tells her that he doesn't want to remember any of it. Caroline compels him to forget, but it is later revealed that it was a setup by Sheriff Forbes to find out everything about the vampires. Matt had already drank some vervain before he went to Caroline's house, so her compulsion didn't work. Isobel kidnaps Elena and takes her to a cemetery where they stand at her grave. Isobel receives a phone call from Maddox who tells her that she has finished what Klaus compelled her to do and is free to let Elena go. Isobel then tells Elena she is sorry that she was a disappointment to her, then removes her necklace and burns to death in the sun. That night, Elena is wondering why she feels bad about Isobel's death. Stefan says it is because she was her mother. John then wakes up after he was killed by Isobel as a distraction for her to kidnap Elena. He and Elena have a talk and he tells her that if his not being there makes her feel safe then he'll leave, but Elena tells him that she wants him to stay because he is the only parent she has left. Stefan and Damon realize that Bonnie is their new secret weapon because neither Isobel nor Katherine knew that Bonnie had her powers back and the power of the massacred witches. Bonnie and Jeremy are at Elena's house when Jeremy reads the warning the witches gave to Bonnie and is upset because if Bonnie uses too much power she will die. He asks her how much power she will need to kill an Original and Bonnie tells him that she needs all of it. She tells him that if she dies it was to save Elena, him, and everybody else. Katherine, who had been taken by Maddox, wakes up in an apartment to see Alaric in a chair and Maddox chanting a spell. Alaric then walks up to Katherine, takes her face in his hands, and says that he has missed her. Katherine realizes that it is Klaus who has taken control of Alaric's body.

Klaus (in Alaric's body) compels Katherine to tell him everything she knows, about how the others plan to kill Klaus. He meets Bonnie, Elena, Stefan and Damon in the Salvatore house, that is now officially Elena's. Elena tells them about a girl who was compelled at school to tell her, that "some hot guy, wanted to have her last dance at the 1960´s dance that evening." Because the others don't recognize Klaus he finds out that Bonnie gained power, that could threaten his life, and that this was their plan to kill him. Matt talks to the sheriff and tells her that he is going to have a hard time making Caroline believe he really forgot everything. The sheriff asks him to try anyway since she needs some time to work things out. At the school dance Jeremy confronts Bonnie again on why she wants to kill herself for Elena and they are overheard by Damon. Jeremy goes to Stefan for help and Stefan tells Elena. After his conversation with Stefan, Jeremy is attacked by people Klaus compelled. Elena and Bonnie follow who they think is Alaric to help him. When Klaus leads them to an empty hallway Elena finally guesses who Alaric really is. When Bonnie notices that Klaus's plan is to kill her, by provoking her into using too much energy she and Elena flee and bump into Damon. Damon tells Elena to find Stefan and then asks Bonnie if she is willing to do what has to be done to kill Klaus. When Stefan and Elena return they find Damon alone and Bonnie fighting with Klaus. After a few striking blows at Klaus Bonnie sinks to the ground and Stefen and Elena can't find a pulse. Damon cuts in and tells them to leave and that he would take care of the body, since the sheriff shouldn't find out about it. He takes Bonnie to the house, where she had received her power and she wakes up there and Jeremy promises to stay there with her. At the Salvatore house Elena grieves the loss of Bonnie, when Damon tells her, that if they want a chance to win Klaus must believe Bonnie is dead. So he had planned everything with Bonnie. That evening Elena shows up at Damon's bedroom and she tells him she understands why he didn't tell her the plan. Damon states that he will always choose Elena, if it should ever come down to Bonnie and Elena again. After this conversation Elena goes down in the basement and pulls the dagger out of Elijah's heart.

After Elena removes the dagger, Elijah wakes and must immediately leave the house as he has not been invited in. Elena asks him to trust her and gives him the dagger to prove she's being honest. In a flashback to 1492 England, Katherine meets Elijah and Klaus for the first time. Stefan and Damon argue over Elena's disappearance and whether or not they should go after her and Elijah. Elena tells Elijah everything that has happened since his death. In return, Elijah tells Elena about Klaus. Elijah and Klaus were raised as brothers, but Klaus was in fact the result of their mother being unfaithful with another man, who was from a werewolf bloodline. Elijah's father hunted down the man and had him and his family killed, beginning the schism between werewolves and vampires. Klaus is a vampire/werewolf hybrid and can only be killed by a witch. The sun and the moon curse was a fake created by Elijah and Klaus -- the real curse is that Klaus' werewolf side had been forced into dormancy by witches. He wants to bring it to the surface and eventually create his own race. Jenna finally finds out about the vampires from Stefan and Klaus/Alaric. Elsewhere, Katherine is being held captive by Klaus. Damon finds her and gives her a vial of vervain to protect her from further compulsion. At the end of the episode, Maddox and Greta (Luka's sister) perform a ritual releasing Klaus' spirit from Alaric's body, and putting it back into his own.

As Elijah, Stefan, and Elena discover a way to save Elena, Damon does not trust Elijah. Elijah tells Elena that the way to break the curse is by channeling the power of the full moon into the moonstone, sacrificing a vampire, a werewolf and by drinking the blood of the doppelganger. He can save Elena by giving her an Elixir. Maddox uses a mind-control spell and makes Carol Lockwood call Tyler and tell him that she had an accident and is in the hospital. Maddox injures Carol by pushing her down the stairs in her home, which forces Tyler and Jules to return to town, after which Maddox and Greta kidnap Caroline and Tyler. Damon tells Elena that he cannot lose her, to which Elena responds he won't, that she trusts Elijah, and the Elixir will work. Damon tells her there is another way and feeds her his blood. Stefan attacks Damon and Damon puts a wooden stake in him. Alaric returns as himself, gives everyone the message from Klaus that the ritual will happen tonight and Jenna forgives him. Damon realizes that if Klaus doesn't have a werewolf he cannot complete the ritual, buying Elena another month. He uses Katherine's help and rescues Caroline and Tyler from the tomb and kills Maddox. Tyler starts transforming and attacks Damon. Damon saves himself, but tells Caroline and Matt to go to the Old Lockwood estate. Stefan and Elena spend a romantic day together and Elena tells Stefan that she doesn't want to become a vampire. Klaus comes and takes Elena. Damon visits Klaus and tells him that he has to postpone the ritual because his werewolf and vampire are gone. Klaus laughs and tells Damon that after trying to break the curse for a 1000 years he has learned to have a backup werewolf (Jules), a backup witch (Greta) and backup vampire. He then attacks Damon. Elena is being led through the woods by Greta and tells her that Dr. Martin and Luka said that she was being held captive by Klaus and they died trying to rescue her. Greta informs Elena that they were mistaken, in an unapologetic tone. Greta takes Elena to the site of the ritual. There Elena sees Jenna dead on the ground. She asks Greta why Klaus killed her. Greta replies that Jenna isn't dead, she is in transition, and she wakes up as a vampire. Back at Alaric's house, Katherine says that she is sorry for doing Klaus' bidding (turning Jenna into a vampire) and Damon asks Katherine why Klaus didn't use him and Katherine replies that Klaus said that he was as good as dead. She asks him about his arm, Damon checks his arm and recognizes a werewolf bite from Tyler's premature transformation into a werewolf.

Matt and Caroline are in the Lockwood cellar while Tyler - in wolf form - attacks them. Matt panics and shoots Tyler. Meanwhile, Greta feeds Jenna her blood, completing her transformation into a vampire. It is revealed that Elijah is seeking revenge on Klaus for killing all of his family and burying their bodies at sea. Stefan receives a call from Damon revealing that Klaus plans to use Jenna as the vampire sacrifice; Stefan however wants to offer himself as the sacrifice in place of Jenna. Meanwhile, Klaus has begun the ritual and has already killed Jules. Stefan arrives and asks Klaus to switch places with Jenna; however, Klaus does not accept his offer and kills Jenna. Back at the boarding house Jeremy, John, Bonnie, Damon, and Alaric find a spell that can bring someone back to life after they have died by connecting the life of the parent and the child. John has Bonnie complete the spell on him, connecting him and Elena together. At the ritual grounds, Stefan watches in horror as Klaus drains Elena's blood. Back at the old mansion, Bonnie leaves with Damon and Elijah, she casts a spell on the house trapping the humans inside, unwilling to let anyone else get hurt. With the doppelganger dead, Klaus has completed the ritual and begins to transform. However, Bonnie arrives and uses her powers to weaken him, while Damon kills Greta. With Klaus on the brink of death, Elijah steps in. Before Elijah can rip out his heart, Klaus says he didn't bury the bodies at sea and if he is killed, Elijah will never find them. He promises to take Elijah to them, and gives him his word. Elijah rethinks the situation, but Stefan and Bonnie urge him to not trust Klaus. However, he changes his mind and leaves with Klaus. Damon takes Elena's body to the old mansion on the site of the witch massacre, and waits for her to come back to life, hoping she won't come back as a vampire as he doesn't want her to hate him forever. Back in the basement, Jeremy reads the whole spell and realizes that once the child is revived the parent will die. He asks John if he read the whole passage and John replies that he did. John gives Jeremy a letter and his ring to give to Elena. While Damon, Jeremy, and Alaric watch as Elena comes back to life, John silently walks away. Elena comes back to life and John looks at her one last time and falls to the ground, dead. Jeremy and Elena are devastated at losing both Jenna and John, the only family they had left. Before the funeral, Elena apologizes to Jeremy saying that because of her he has lost everyone. Jeremy replies that at least he has her. At the funeral, Damon reveals to Stefan that he was bitten by Tyler and asks him to do Elena a favor and not tell her as the last thing she needs is another grave to mourn. Stefan promises to find a cure, but Damon says there is no cure and walks away.

Elena and Jeremy try to return to normal activities by attending Mystic Falls' screening of "Gone with the Wind". Damon attempts to win Elena's forgiveness even though he admits that he doesn't deserve it. Elena refuses him. Damon then attempts to commit suicide as he knows what will happen due to the werewolf bite but he is stopped and locked up by Stefan. Stefan seeks Bonnie's help to find a cure for a werewolf bite. He asks Bonnie to help him contact Emily so they can find a cure for Damon. Emily refuses to cooperate, but Bonnie hears the witches say a name: Klaus. During this time, Klaus has completed the transformation into a wolf and awakens to find Elijah waiting for him. He makes Klaus remember his deal: he must reunite Elijah with their family which Klaus says he will. Stefan goes to see Klaus and asks him for the cure. Klaus says he must first keep his promise to Elijah, that he would reunite him with the family he killed. He then betrays Elijah, stabbing and killing him with the dagger for the second time. Klaus reveals that his blood is the cure for a werewolf bite by biting Katherine and then giving her his blood. In exchange for a vial, Klaus wants Stefan to become a ripper again and leave Mystic Falls with him, claiming that he has big plans for him. Stefan agrees and drinks human blood to prove himself. Klaus then gives Katherine the cure and tells her to bring it to Damon. Sheriff Forbes attempts to ambush Damon at the Salvatore house, but Damon escapes. Jeremy is the next to intercept Damon and brings him to the Grill. Sheriff Forbes finds them and shoots at Damon, but hits Jeremy instead. Caroline, Alaric, and Bonnie arrive. Caroline attempts to give him her blood to heal him, but it was too late. Then, Bonnie takes him and begs the witches to bring him back to life, which they do, meanwhile warning Bonnie of "consequences". The news of Jeremy's revival reaches Caroline and her mother, who make amends. Elena finds a delirious Damon and brings him back home, where Elena kisses him after Damon confesses his love for her. Katherine interrupts with Klaus' cure. Later, Klaus tests Stefan once more, asking him to chase and kill a human girl. Once Stefan does this, Klaus says they can now leave Mystic Falls. At the Gilbert house, Jeremy is awakened by noises. He goes downstairs, where he finds his deceased vampire ex-girlfriends Anna and Vicki.

Production

On February 16, 2010, The CW official renewed The Vampire Diaries for a full 22-episode second season.[1] It premiered on Thursday September 9, 2010, at 8/7c.[2]

The season finale aired on May 12, 2011.[27]

Cast

On July 9, 2010, Entertainment Weekly announced Taylor Kinney would join the cast in a recurring role as Tyler's uncle, Mason. Mason Is a werewolf and the uncle of Tyler who comes to town after his brother dies. He is sent to Mystic Falls by Katherine to get the moonstone to her, which succeeds, but Damon and Stefan find out he works with Katherine and Damon kills him. He was described as a “cool” uncle, sexy and athletic.[28] Lauren Cohan joined the cast as Rose, a 500 year old Vampire and possible love interest for Damon. She kidnaps Elena in order to hand her over to Elijah, but Elena is saved by Stefan and Damon. She then becomes an ally to them and even starts a small romantic relationship with Damon. She dies after she is bitten by werewolf Jules.[29]

Michaela McManus joined the cast for a guest role as a werewolf who comes to town looking for answers on Mason's death.[30] She helps Tyler deal with finding out he is a werewolf, but is later killed during the sacrifice. Bryton James portrays warlock Luka Martin in season two. He befriends Bonnie, but it is later found out that he and his father work for Elijah. He is burned to death by Damon when he tries to invisibly save Elijah. His father Jonas Martin, played by Randy J. Goodwin in season two, is a warlock introduced as a friend of Elijah's who can help defeat Klaus in order to save his daughter.[31] He is later killed by Katherine, who is protecting the Salvatore brothers.[32]

Gino Anthony Pesi portrays Maddox at the end of season two, a warlock that works for Klaus. He is shot to death by Matt when he tries to take down Damon. On February 18, 2011, it was announced that British actor Joseph Morgan has signed on to play original vampire Klaus.[33]

Plot

The second season mainly focuses on the arrival of Elena's doppelganger Katherine Pierce and the reasons she returned to Mystic Falls. The second season also introduces werewolves. Tyler's Uncle, Mason Lockwood, reveals as a werewolf, arrives in the town after the death of his brother, Tyler's father, and tells Tyler about the so called "Lockwood curse" that has run in their family for centuries. He tells Tyler that in order to activate the curse, more specifically to activate the "werewolf" gene, the person must kill someone. Katherine turns Caroline into a vampire, after Caroline ingested Damon's blood to heal from the accident, so she can have a spy against Stefan and Elena, using Matt to scare Caroline into helping her. Tyler accidentally kills an innocent girl after Katherine compelled her to provoke him. Katherine's main reason for returning to Mystic Falls was to find the moonstone, with the help of Mason, who is later killed by Damon. Katherine falls back on Plan B and calls in a favor from a witch named Lucy to help her get the stone back from Stefan and Damon. Lucy casts a spell on Elena and Katherine, meaning that when Katherine is hurt, it also affects Elena. When Lucy finds out another Bennett is at the party and Katherine had deceived her, she puts a spell on the moonstone, injuring Katherine. Damon then leaves her in the original tomb, where he believes she belongs. She tells him the reason she hasn't killed Elena is because she is in danger and needs protection. Damon ignores her and leaves her in the tomb, thinking she's lying. Elena is later kidnapped, showing that Katherine had been telling the truth. Elena is held hostage by two 500-year-old vampires, Rose and Trevor, who have been on the run from the Originals-the first generation of vampires. Rose reveals to Elena that she is the Petrova doppelganger and needs to be sacrificed to break the sun and the moon curse. Katherine was also a Petrova doppelganger who used Trevor to help her escape from the Originals and Rose to turn her into a vampire to save herself. Elena is rescued by Stefan and Damon before Elijah, an Original, can take her away.

Klaus, the oldest vampire in history, is now hunting for Elena. Klaus wants to break the curse before the werewolves can. Elijah has made a deal with Elena to continue living her life instead of trying to hand herself over to Klaus. That way, he will protect her loved ones because he wants to use Elena as bait so he can lure out Klaus and kill him. Elena agrees to do so, and gives Elijah one more condition: he must free Stefan from the tomb, and Elijah accepts. Jules, a friend of Mason, comes into town informing the Lockwoods he never came back to Florida and reports him as a missing person. Alaric is suspicious and calls Damon to the Grill. They try various methods to trick Jules into revealing if she is a werewolf or not, but Jules eventually reveals that she is indeed a werewolf, and could "sniff out" that Damon is a vampire and the wolfsbane Alaric put in her drink the whole time. Damon tells Jules she won't find Mason and to leave town. She tells Damon it's stupid of him to threaten her during a full moon and that he's been "marked." Later, Jules breaks into the Salvatore mansion in wolf form and attacks Damon, but Rose pushes him out of the way, getting bitten instead. As Rose succumbs to the effects of her wolf bite, Damon stakes her into a peaceful death, as Jules says a stake to the heart is the only cure.

Uncle John's return to Mystic Falls comes as an unpleasant surprise to Elena, Damon, Jenna, and Alaric. John reveals to Damon that the only way to kill an Original is with a dagger dipped in white ash wood, which dates back to the Original's beginning. John is still working with Katherine and has a plan to get her out of the tomb. After being put under a hypnosis spell by Bonnie, Luka reveals that he and his dad are working for Elijah because Klaus has his sister and they want him dead as well. Luka says that Klaus will be weakened by the sacrificial ritual, meaning Elena has to die so Elijah can kill him and set his sister free. Stefan figures out that Elena knew about Elijah's plans for her, telling her she's being a martyr and not heroic. John gives Damon the dagger with the ash from the white oak so he can kill Elijah. Elena finds more of John Gilbert's journals and finds out that if a vampire uses the dagger, he will die as well. Stefan warns Damon in time and Alaric uses the dagger to stab Elijah, but he pulls the dagger back out, which means Elijah isn't really dead. He shows up at the cabin Elena and Stefan are staying at and tells Elena their deal is off. Elena threatens to turn herself into a vampire if Elijah doesn't honor their deal, but he doesn't believe her. She stabs herself in the stomach. Elijah panics and agrees to protect her friends and family and begs her to let him heal her. When she comes forward so he can give her some of his blood, she stabs him with the dagger and leaves it in him. Elijah's death means Katherine is no longer compelled to stay in the tomb and she returns to Damon and Stefan's house where she says she'll stay and help them take down Klaus. She helps in killing the Martin witches when they try to bring Elijah back to life and also when Jonas tries to kill Elena. But when Isobel returns to town, Katherine double crosses the Salvatores by kidnapping Elena and stealing the moonstone for Klaus in exchange for her freedom. But it is revealed that Klaus wanted Katherine and compelled Isobel to get her and the moonstone. When Klaus comes to town, he enters Alaric's body and keeps Katherine with him. He compels her to stay in Alaric's house. Bonnie and Jeremy find the site of the witch massacre with Damon's help and Bonnie channels all the power. The Alaric-Klaus blends with Stefan, Damon and Elena and finds out that Bonnie has her powers. Then he tries to kill Bonnie by making her summon all her powers. Damon tells Bonnie to put a protection spell and make Alaric-Klaus believe that she is dead. Elena does not want Bonnie to die while killing Klaus, so she pulls the dagger out of Elijah's heart. After Elijah comes to life, Elena learns the full history of Klaus. She finds out that the Aztec curse is fake and that there is a curse on Klaus as he is a vampire born in a werewolf bloodline.
