Route description

Maryland Route 787 begins at an intersection with Maryland Route 195 (Carroll Avenue) in Takoma Park. Flower Avenue continues south as a narrow municipally-maintained street that winds its way downhill to Sligo Creek Parkway. MD 787 heads north as a two-lane road with a speed limit of 25 mph (40 km/h) through the campus of Washington Adventist University.[1] After travelling through a pedestrian crossing traffic signal, the state highway changes from being completely within the city limits of Takoma Park to lying on the eastern boundary of the municipality. MD 787 leaves the university campus after passing Maplewood Avenue and enters a dense residential area with occasional small businesses lining the road.[2] The state highway then reaches a four-way stop at Houston Avenue.[1] After continuing north through more residential areas, the road enters a commercial area immediately before hitting its northern terminus at an intersection with Maryland Route 320 (Piney Branch Road), an intersection that forms the northeast corner of the Takoma Park city limits. Flower Avenue continues north as a residential street into Silver Spring. MD 787 has an average annual daily traffic figure of 6650 vehicles at the northern edge of the Washington Adventist University campus, as well as an AADT of 8730 just south of MD 320.[3]

History

Maryland Route 787 was originally designated as Maryland Route 194. MD 194 followed Flower Avenue from what was then the Prince George's County line at Chaney Drive in Takoma Park north to Franklin Avenue in Silver Spring, which was then Maryland Route 516.[4] However, MD 194 later became involved in a route number swap involving three state highways in different parts of the state that led to its current route number.

In 1956, the Blue Star Memorial Highway was under construction on the Eastern Shore. This new route needed a state route number, so MD 71 was removed from Woodsboro Pike and Francis Scott Key Highway in Frederick and Carroll Counties and assigned to the Blue Star Memorial Highway.[5][6] The MD 71 designation was removed when U.S. Route 301 was moved from Baltimore to the Eastern Shore in 1960.[7] The highway in west central Maryland needed a designation to replace MD 71, so that route was numbered to match its northern continuation, Pennsylvania Route 194.[6] This highway remains Maryland Route 194.[8][9] Finally, Flower Avenue needed a new designation, so it was assigned a seemingly random available number.[10]

In 1999, as part of a major mileage swap between state and county highways in Montgomery County, the segment of Flower Avenue between MD 320 and MD 516 was transferred to county maintenance.[11] In 2000, the 0.10 miles (0.16 km) section of Flower Avenue between Chaney Drive and MD 195, which had been municipally-maintained, was officially removed as a state highway, leaving MD 787 at its present length.[12]
