Sale el sol (English: The Sun Comes Out) is the seventh studio album by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira, released on October 19, 2010.[3] The album cover was released on August 31, 2010.[4] In a promotion strategy, Los 40 Principales in Spain premiered the album on streaming on October 12, one week before the album release.[5]

The album debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 becoming her fourth-highest peak on the chart. It also debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Latin Albums Chart and stayed there for over 12 consecutive weeks.

The album has sold over 250.000 copies in the US and over 2 million copies worldwide.[6] The album received three Latin Grammy Award nominations including Album of the Year and won the award for Best Female Pop Vocal Album.

Recording and production

The album was recorded in the Bahamas, London, Barcelona, and the Dominican Republic. Shakira describes the album musically as having "a strong rock side" along with "romantic" and "Latino" songs.[7] Shakira told MTV that the album was "very personal" and would deal with the issues of heartbreak.[8] Dizzee Rascal is one of several collaborators to appear on the album, featuring on the first single "Loca". Of the collaboration he said it was proof of his willingness to experiment "I know it sounds a bit mad now, but you'll see it and see what's going on. It's me doing something different man, on a merengue tip."[9]

El Cata, one of the collaborators on the album, said "If I was thinking that this little studio was going to be in the world’s vision at this time, I wouldn’t believe it." He added "She told me, ‘You have something that makes me move.’ I told her it was the percussion, and I said, ‘Those sounds that you want, I have them in my studio."[10] Other collaborations are said to include songs with rappers Calle 13 and Pitbull.[7] Aside from calling it "the best album of her career (sic)", Shakira said "I'm very excited about the new album, because it reminds me of different eras and stages of my career. It's like a synthesis of all these 20 years... It's been quite interesting to make this album, I've been reconnecting to myself."[8] On her official website it was confirmed that Shakira's 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" will also appear on the album in a rockier remix.[3]

In an interview with The New York Times, Shakira explained "We all go through hard moments. Whatever happened, it’s right there in the songs. I’ve decided that I’m not going to explain every song this time. It’s hard to explain a song. These songs explain me better than I can explain them."[10]

"I have this gift, and I try to use it as wisely as I can, you know? I realized the weight that I carry with a song like that one (talking about "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)"), that so many people are going to make it part of their lives. So it had better send a message that is positive, that is optimistic, that brings a healthy state of mind to people’s lives. There are songs that are just to dance to in a club, that don’t have a big transcendence. But there are songs that will remain in people’s hearts and people’s consciousness, sometimes forever. There are songs that have the power to feed people’s relationships and states of mind and states of spirit. I remember moments in my life that are completely linked to a certain song, so every song has a purpose. But when I’m creating a song, I do it in such a personal and intimate way that at that moment. I’m not really thinking much. I’m just letting it all out."[10]

Music and lyrics

The title track "Sale el sol" is a rock song which calls for optimism through difficult times[10] and Shakira dedicated this song to Gustavo Cerati.[11] "Devoción", "Antes de las seis" and "Lo que más" churn with longing, regrets and loneliness. According to The New York Times "The music hopscotches across hemispheres, at times looking back to the music Shakira loved while growing up in Barranquilla". About this Shakira said "Barranquilla is the cradle of Carnaval in our country. All the stuff from the islands and from those neighbor countries, all that music got to Barranquilla."[10]

The first single "Loca" features electrified merengue fusions.[10] "Gordita" is a Latin-rap hybrid with collboration with René Pérez of Calle 13. "I told her it was a good idea to make fun of yourself," he said by telephone from Puerto Rico, "That way the haters can’t say anything, because you already said it."[10] Shakira wrote the verses for "Waka Waka" in English but brought the lyrics to her fellow-songwriter Jorge Drexler to adapt them into Spanish.[10] Jorge said "If what I proposed was understandable and at the same time a little wild and poetic, that was the choice. She would go for the impact. She is like a fighter. She chooses her punch lines very, very well, and she works on that very, very hard."[10]

Upon its release, Sale el sol received general acclaim from most music critics.[19] At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 89, based on 5 reviews, which indicates "universal acclaim".[19] Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic gave the album four and a half stars (out of five). Erlewine said that "'Waka Waka' provided the perfect pivot to the quickly recorded new album Sale el sol, a set that shows no allegiance to any one sound or language. Shakira mostly ditches the electro-throb of She Wolf in favor for a pan-global approach that’s decidedly pop in flavor, sometimes riding heavy rhythms but always relying on melody and texture, creating a tight 12-track record that’s casual in its eclecticism but no less dazzling because of its relaxed tone." Erlewine said that "Despite all these sounds, Sale el Sol never once sounds disparate or overworked -- it’s sunny and easy, its natural buoyancy disguising Shakira’s range and skill -- but listen closely and it becomes apparent that nobody makes better pop records in the new millennium than she does."[12] Jody Rosen of Rolling Stone gave the album three and a half stars (out of five) commenting that "Nuttiness has always been part of her appeal, with a warbling voice and lyrics that border on surreal. [...] But mostly, her new album is businesslike, serious, sane. The music blends Latin rhythms, clubland electronica and lots of rock guitar."[16] Billboard music critic Leila Cobo gave the album a favorable review. She said that "Shakira's album material seems to strike a much purer chord in Spanish" and that the album is "a mix of uptempo dance tracks based on traditional Latin rhythms like merengue, hard-kicking rock tracks and earthier rock ballads that all told are infinitely more memorable and unique than the singer's baffling 2009 set, She Wolf". Cobo concluded her review by saying that Sale el sol "manages to bridge the divide between the old and new Shakira with a spark that keeps you listening to the very end."[2]

Entertainment Weekly music critic Mikael Wood gave the album an A rating. He said that "On last year's zany She Wolf, Shakira made a move toward the American dance floor. This time she sticks closer to home [...] Yet Sale el Sol still demonstrates Shakira's boldly global mindset"[14] An album review/article was written by The New York Times editor Jon Pareles on October 14, 2010. He said: "“Sale el Sol” (Epic) is Shakira’s latest shift of direction. Her 2009 album, “She Wolf,” aimed for the international common denominator of electronic dance music; Shakira produced most of it with the Neptunes, a team of prolific, and familiar, hip-hop and R&B hit makers. “Sale el Sol,” with songs primarily in Spanish, drops that mainstreaming strategy in favor of instinct, whim and glimmers of what Shakira, 33, calls nostalgia. It’s full of idiosyncratic crossovers and hybrids, often tied to very specific places."[20] Allison Stewart from The Washington Post said that " 'Sale' showcases Shakira's remarkable voice, as always an indecipherable waterfall of gurgles and growls and coos where consonants go to die and where English and Spanish versions sound pretty much the same. "Sale" is eclectic though not necessarily adventurous—most tracks would have sounded equally at home in late 2008—but it provides a better showcase for Shakira's countless charms than its predecessors ever did."[18] Carlos Quintana from About.com rated it 3.5. stars and said that: "With Sale El Sol, Shakira continues to show her never ending innovative style giving us an indication of her artistic evolution and current musical interests." Quintana conclued: "Overall, Sale El Sol is an enjoyable album to listen to. Whether you are in a party or relaxing mood, this album offers you both."[21] Michelle Morgante from Boston said, positively, that: "Overall, "Sale El Sol" is a truer representation of the Shakira who has excited Latin America and propelled her onto the world stage. Perhaps here, with Shakira's raw essence on display, those who don't already know her will understand what the fuss is all about."[13] Jennifer Schaffer from The Stanford Daily conclued that: "Shakira’s “Sale el Sol” is a fantastically diverse album with some awesome collaborations and a truly impressive range of emotions. It’s a sexy, self-assured and successful leap from the pop music vibe that marks her recent hits."[17]

The album received three Latin Grammy Award nominations, winning one:

It became Shakira's fifth top ten album and her fourth highest album debut on the top ten after Laundry Service debuted at #3 Fijación Oral Vol. 1 debuted at #4 and, Oral Fixation Vol. 2 debuted at #5 both in 2005.[22] The following week, the album dropped nine positions to #16 with sales of 20,399. 56 percent less than previous week.[23] The album also debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums charts, and became her fifth number one album on the chart and also topped almost every chart throughout Latin America.[24] According to Nielsen SoundScan, "Sale el sol" was the highest debut for a Latin album of 2010. During the first week, Sony Music VP of marketing for Latin America Fernando Cabral said that more than 50,000 units were sold — an extraordinary amount for the market.[25] In its eighth week on top of the Billboard Top Latin Albums Chart she pushed off competition to remain at the top from fellow Colombian singer Juanes whose album P.A.R.C.E fell to number 2 behind Shakira.[26]

The album has accounted for 39% of overall album sales for the Latin Top 100 albums and has reached and remained at number 1 on the Latin iTunes, the sales, chart position, and the heavily digital sales are records for Spanish-language albums released this year.[27]

The album debuted at #3 on European Top 100 Albums after debuting at No. 1 in Spain and Portugal, No. 2 in France, No. 3 in Austria, No. 6 in Germany and No. 10 in the Netherlands.[28] After two weeks at No. 3 on European Albums, the album moved up to a peak of No. 2, spending a second week atop the French chart and climbing 3-1 in Italy. It's down 1-2 in Portugal and 1-3 in the Belgian region of Wallonia, but climbs 15-4 in Hungary and 14-7 in the Czech Republic, holding at No. 3 in Spain and adding a No. 3 debut in Poland.[29] The album debuted at #2 on French Physical Album Chart with sales of 13,500, becoming her highest peaking album on the chart. It also debuted at #4 on the French Digital Album Chart with sales of 2,000.[30] The album also debuted at number 6 at German Album Chart[31] and number 2 on German Dowloads Chart.[32] It has sold 410,000 copies alone in France since its release in October 2010.[33]

Promotion

Shakira perfoming Loca in Uruguay.

Shakira performed the album's title track back in June 2010 during the Rock In Rio concert in Madrid.[7] On June 26, 2010 she also performed "Gordita (feat Calle 13)" and "Islands" on Glastonbury Festival 2010.[38] Shakira performed "Loca" at the Late Show With David Letterman on September 23, 2010.[39]

Additionally to coincide with the album, Shakira embarked on The Sun Comes Out World Tour, which started on September 15, 2010 in Montreal, Canada.[40] The album and tour coincide with each other.[41] The tour is in support of both her 2009 studio album "She Wolf" and Sale el sol.[42]

In November 2009, Shakira announced a contest to feature unsigned bands and/or singers to be featured as an opening act for her tour.[43] The tour was officially announced in May 2010 with dates in North America. The singer describes the tour as being "energetic" and "interactive" stating,[44]

"It's going to have themes and there'll be a lot of audience interaction. My live show will have a lot of that - a lot of dancing, a joie de vivre. I feel such freedom on stage. It's such a rush to be performing. I like to see everybody's faces on stage, to see the reaction. [...] So you'll see a lot of [my] energy... but there are also going to be other moments that I hope are artistically energetic. I want people to feel things up close," she finished.

The tour began with a preview date at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec before officially commencing at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.[45]

There have been three separate incidents of fans rushing the stage while Shakira was performing on stage. The third of these rushers fell over on her way to Shakira. Shakira has gained both criticism and praise for helping the fan up and giving her a hug before security escorted her out.[46] The first stage rush did not end so happily however, and the man got rugby tackled on the stage by security before being escorted off. After her sold out performance at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Shakira gave an impromptu performance on top of a car and invited fans to join her in her dancing.[47]

  • "Sale el sol", was released on January 4, 2011 to digital marketplaces as the second single.[53] The single debuted and peaked at no. 8 in Spain,[54] 10 on the US Latin Songs Chart[55] and 2 on the US Latin Pop Songs Chart.[56]
  • "Rabiosa" was released on 8 April 2011, as the third single from the album. The song features rappers Pitbull and El Cata on the English and Spanish version, respectively.[57] The music video for the song was shot on April 26–27, 2011 and was released on June 7, 2011.
  • "Antes de las seis" is the fourth official single from the album, and the first single from Shakira: Live from Paris.[58] It was released as a digital download in the U.S. on October 21, 2011.[59]
