Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) is an American company, headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, that provides U.S. flag transportation, ship management and maritime technical services to government and commercial customers. As a business within the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group, MLL uniquely combines unparalleled experience, maritime expertise and global intermodal capability. In 1983, MLL won its first government contract to convert and operate five military prepositioning ships. Since then, they have managed and operated more than 90 vessels of varying types and sizes. With the largest U.S. flag fleet in commercial service, they employ approximately 900 U.S. mariners daily and work with all the major U.S. maritime unions. ^[1]

U.S. Flag Transportation Services

Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) supports military, government and humanitarian missions through the transport of cargo on its container, tanker and multi-purpose ships. They also offer roll-on/ roll-off vessels through their affiliate Farrell Lines.They also participate in the Maritime Security Program (MSP) and Voluntary Intermodal Sealift Agreement (VISA) ensures that MLL assets afloat and ashore are always available to support U.S. government needs. ^[2] Their performance (on-time delivery, good order and condition) with U.S. military cargo shipments has been consistently rewarded with an Alpha carrier status with the U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM).^[3]

Equipment Options

MLL, through its parent company, the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group, owns more than 1,900,000 dry and refrigerated containers of all sizes and types worldwide. These containers are maintained to fully comply with the International Maritime Association’s Convention for Safe Containers standards.^[4]

Northern Distribution Network

As part of their commitment to the U.S. military, MLL supports the Northern Distribution Network (NDN) as an alternative supply route into Afghanistan.^[5] They offer P2 U.S. flag ocean service from the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts into Riga, Latvia and Poti, Georgia, which serve as the ports of entry into the NDN.^[6] MLL also offers P1 service via Rotterdam. They then move cargo discharged in one of these ports via rail and truck into Afghanistan through its northern borders.^[7]
