Career

Hugo Sigman studied medicine at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and undertook his residency in psychiatry at the Araóz Alfaro Hospital, in Lanús, where he was also Head of Residents. He is married to biochemist Silvia Gold, with whom he has three children. Together, they direct the Fundación Mundo Sano, a NGO that, through community work and scientific research, fights diseases transmitted by vectors, such as dengue fever, Chagas disease, hantavirus, leptospirosis and leishmaniasis.

In the health field, Sigman is the president of Grupo CHEMO, which has its headquarters in Spain and is directed by his eldest son, Leandro Sigman. In Argentina, Hugo Sigman is a partner in Elea and Biogénesis-Bagó laboratories. He also contributes to a Scientific Research Consortium that unites the efforts of university researchers, the Government and the private sector, in the search for new treatments for cancer. One of these treatments is already in phase III and another is in phase II of testing. In 2008, Mr Sigman was honoured with a merit diploma at the Konex Awards, in the "Innovating Entrepreneurs" category.

Communication and Art

Hugo Sigman's publishing house, Capital Intelectual, publishes the Southern Cone edition of Le Monde Diplomatique and also has a broad catalogue of books, which includes collections such as Los Recobrados, edited by Abelardo Castillo, and Claves Para Todos, edited by José Nun. Meanwhile, the production company K&S Films, a joint venture with Oscar Kramer, has made some very well known and prestigious Argentine films such as Tiempo de Valientes, by Damián Szifrón, Crónica de una fuga, by Israel Adrián Caetano, and El Perro, by Carlos Sorín. Sigman's passion for art has led him to be a member of the Advisory Committee of the National Museum of Fine Arts, and to collaborate with the Argentine contributions to the Venice Biennale by the artists Jorge Macchi, Guillermo Kuitca and Luis Felipe Noé. The range of Sigman's activities also includes farming and forestry, with companies like Garruchos and Pomera, Los Murmullos Lodge, and Yacaré Porá, a sustainable venture that has increased the Yacaré Caiman population in the province of Corrientes and also produces international quality leather.
