Dialogue in Silence is an exhibition which invites into a world of silence. Other forms of expression are used in this exhibition, where deaf persons guide the visitors in small groups through rooms which is totally soundproof. They discover their repertoire of nonverbal expression in order to communicate creatively by mime, gesture and body language.[1] Dialogue in Silence is a social franchising company, offering exhibitions and business training in total silence, creating jobs for the deaf, disabled and disadvantaged worldwide.

Background & History

In 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated 278 million people worldwide having moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears.

"The impact of hearing impairment on a child's speech, language, education and social integration depends on the level and type of hearing impairment, and the age of onset, especially if it begins before the age when speech normally develops." [2]

Dialogue in Silence was created by Dr. Andreas Heinecke and Orna Cohen. Andreas Heinecke is a Social Entrepreneur[3] and also the founder and CEO of Dialogue in the Dark, an installation where blind people lead sighted visitors through a totally dark space. Dialogue in Silence is based on this concept and applies it to the world of hearing impaired people.

It was first presented in Frankfurt, Germany in 1997 as “Schattensprache”.[4] In 2003 the exhibition was presented in the Cité des Sciences et l’Industrie in Paris, France. [5]

Dialogue in Silence is not an installation simulating deafness. It sees itself as a platform where hearing and non hearing people meet to show their readiness to think about social stereotypes and overcome prejudices. [6] Visitors can immerse themselves into the silent world of deaf people.

The exhibition wants to facilitate social inclusion of marginalized people on a global basis.
