IBA: the premier Business School under Dhaka University

Today, there are 10 faculties, 52 departments, 9 institutes, 34 research centres, 1,545 teachers, about 30,000 students, 18 residential halls and 2 hostels.[1][2] Two-thirds of the present faculty possesses degrees from universities in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. Many of them achieved international reputation for their scholarly works. Many also have the experience of teaching in well-known institutions of higher learning abroad.

Faculties

Faculty of Business Studies

The Faculty of Business Studies (FBS) (Bengali: বাণিজ্য অনুষদ) is one of the leading faculties of University of Dhaka. In 1922, one year after the establishment of University of Dhaka,Department of Commerce was founded under Faculty of Arts. Later in 1970 it started its activities as a separate faculty. At first it had only two departments-Accounting and Management. In 1974, Department of Finance and Department of Marketing came into existence. It was renamed Faculty of Business Studies in 1994. It currently consists of eight departments which are Finance, Accounting and Information Systems, Banking, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Management Studies, International Business and Hospitality and Tourism Management.It also has a Bureau of Business Research.

The Students of this faculty published two Business Magazines named the The Voice of Business (VOB) & Business Mind. These are semi-annual Business Magazine.VOB is the First and Only Business Magazine published by the Student of the Faculty of Business Studies (FBS), University of Dhaka. The Voice of Business has grown to become the largest student-run publication in the country. The Voice of Business focuses on stories that provide students with a broader understanding of business leadership, industry innovation, international perspectives, and career track advice.Dr. Jamal Uddin is the Dean of this faculty

It offers Bachelor of Business Administration, Masters of Business Administration, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy programmes. In addition, it offers Evening MBA program for the executives. The BBA program is a four-year program. The program comprises 120 credit hours spread over eight semesters.

Currently it has around 4800 students, 129 teachers and 56 administrative staffs.

Faculty of Arts

The oldest faculty of the University includes departments like, Philosophy,History,English,Linguistics,Bengali, Arabic,Information science & Library management etc. The current dean is Dr. Sadrul Amin.

There are 13 departments in this faculty. The departments are:

  • Department of Arabic

Currently the chairman of this department is Dr. A B M Siddiqur Rahman Nizami <<bre>>The Department of Arabic started its journey in 1921. In the beginning, it was named Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies. In 1980 the Department of Arabic became a separate department. Samsul Olama Abu Nasr Wahid was the first Head of the Department. Dr. S. M. Hussain, a former student and teacher of this department was the first Vice-Chancellor from the alumni of the University of Dhaka. The Department offers a four-year B.A. Honours, a one-year M.A., a two-year M. Phil and a three-year Ph.D. programme. The research students of the department have been contributing significantly to the different sectors at the national and international levels. The Department provides facilities to carry out advanced research in Classical and Modern Arabic literature in Prose and Poetry, History of Arabic Language and Literature, Arabic Philology and Linguistics, Comparative Literature and Linguistics, Arabic Literary Criticism and Comparative Literary Criticism, Arabic Calligraphy, Science of Interpretation, Arabic Lexicography, History of Islam and Islamic Civilization, Muslim Philosophy, Islamic Ideology and Research Methodology. Prescribed and recommended books are available in the seminar library.[3]

  • Department of Bengali

Currently the chairman of this department is Dr. A.K.Fazlul Haque

Dhaka University started her journey on 1 July in 1921 with only 3 faculties & 12 departments. The Department of Bengali is one of the twelve departments with which the University of Dhaka was launched in 1921 on its long & glorious journey. In a sense, the history of the department is largely the history of the University of Dhaka as well as the long journey to birth of our nation in 1971.Dhaka University for the very first time introduced a totally separated “BENGALI & SANSKRIT DEPARTMENT’ in the era Of united India. At the beginning, students were taught both Bengali & Sanskrit Literature. Although faculties emphasized on Bengali by making an enriched syllabus for it. The first chairman of this department was the great Sri Haroproshad Shastri who discovered & placed before the world the ancient document of Bengali script named “CHARJYAPAD”. The first reader of this department was Srish Chandra Chatarjee. Also the lecturer was the first student of “comparative philology” in the British era Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah & the famous manuscript expert Radha gobinda Boshak.This department excelled from its very first year of D.U by many important researches & many unknown theory & information belonging to Bengali done by her profound teachers. In 1970 “BENGALI & SANSKRIT DEPARTMENT” was separated into two parts & from then on the department took the name “DEPARTMENT OF BENGALI”. The department has already passed her glorious 80 long & successful years.She made many scholars who led the nation in 1971 & for the next crisis period. “DEPARTMENT OF BENGALI” lost many of her profound teachers & scholars during 1971 but still excels with her distinctive norms & heritage .

  • Department of English

Currently the chairman of this department is Dr. Khondakar Ashraf Chowdhury[4]

  • Department of History

On the same day when the academic activities of University of Dhaka was started on 1 July 1921, Department of History started functioning along with few other departments with five teaching faculties and seven students in the B.A. (Hons.) programme. In 1923, admission to post graduate (Final Part) programme was started . From the very day of its commencement the Department of History has grown up to the level to accommodate six hundred students and to host thirty teachers till today.

From 1921 to 1971, University of Dhaka played an important role in contemporary politics and the teachers and students of History Department was an important part of it. Active participation of the teachers and students in the anti-colonial revolutionary movements of thirties, Language movements of 1952, Mass Upsurge of 1969 and Liberation movement of 1971 bears the testimony of the glorious history of the History Department. Currently the chairman of this department is Dr. Abul Hussain Ahmed Kamal.[5]

  • Department of Islamic Studies

Currently the chairman of this department is Dr. Muhammad Ruhul Amin [6]

  • Department of Philosophy

On the same day when the academic activities of University of Dhaka was started on 1 July 1921, Department of Philosophy started functioning along with few other departments with five teaching faculties. Currently the chairperson of this department is Professor Mrs Husneara Alam

The Department of Linguistics in University of Dhaka is a young department which was established in 1992. Students first were admitted to the Masters programme in the Department of Linguistics from the academic session of 1993-1994. The BA (Hons) programme was introduced from 1996-1997. The department is going to introduce a Postgraduate Diploma programme soon on Language and Communication. Currently the chairman of this department is Dr. Feroza Yasmin.[8]

  • Department of World Religions

The Department of Comparative Religion was established on December 1, 1999 and Dr. Kazi Nurul Islam was appointed its Chairman.Currently the chairman of this department is Mrs. Eva Sadia Saad.[9]

Faculty of Science

The science faculty was started with only three department in 1921 - Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics Department.Now there are about nine departments in faculty of science.[10]

Faculty of Pharmacy

Founded in 1964, the Department of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka is the first and foremost institution providing pharmacy education in Bangladesh. Approximately 90 percent of the Bangladeshi pharmacists working in the country and abroad are graduates of the University of Dhaka. Realizing the increasing demand of pharmacy education in national and international stage Academic council of Dhaka University decided to establish Pharmacy Faculty in 1993 and it went on operation in 1995 under Dr. Mrs. Nurun Nahar Rahman (as acting Dean). First elected Dean was Prof. Dr. A.K.Azad Chowdhary.

In 2003, three new Departments were established under Pharmacy Faculty named Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Clinical Pharmacy & Pharmacology and Pharmaceutics & Pharmaceutical Technology.

Faculty of Biological Science

It was established on the 1 January 1974. Previously the departments of this faculty was associated with the Faculty of Science. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Soil Science, Microbiology, Botany & Zoology are the mention-worthy departments of the faculty. It offers BSc (Honours), MSc, MS, M.Phil. and Ph.D courses.

Initially this faculty consisted of the Departments of Soil Science (presently Soil, Water and Environment), Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry (presently Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), and Psychology. Later Department of Microbiology (1979), Department of Clinical Psychology (1997), Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries (1997) (presently Department of Fisheries) and Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (2000) became members of this Faculty when those departments were established.

The Faculty publishes the Dhaka University Journal of Biological Sciences.

Current Dean of this faculty is Professor M. Abul Bashar.

Institute of Business Administration (IBA) carries the distinction of being the pioneer of all the business schools of Bangladesh. Commitment to the highest educational standards distinguishes IBA among the educational institutes in Bangladesh. IBA graduates are highly sought after by the industry, who have made outstanding contributions to various fields, both at home and abroad.

Founded in 1966, IBA began its journey by launching its flagship MBA program. In response to the growing demand for business education at the undergraduate level, the BBA program was started in 1993.

In a proud history spanning more than four decades, the teachers and students of IBA have partnered together to achieve a level of excellence still unmatched in Bangladesh.

Institute of Statistical Research and Training (ISRT)

Institute of Statistical Research and Training, popularly known as ISRT, was established in 1964 by a statute of the University of Dhaka. The Institute offers 4-year BSc (Honors) and 1-year MS degree in Applied Statistics. PhD and M Phil degrees are also offered.

In the annual session of June 2001, The Dhaka University Senate established Institute of Information Technology (IIT). by converting the erstwhile Computer Center (Estd. in 1985). The aim was to produce skilled manpower in the field of Information Technology (IT) and to establish a computer network in the University. The four-storey red ceramic IIT building has a quiet ambience and is adjacent to Dhaka University Centre of Excellence in Science and the Institute of Statistical Research and Training
