Delaney is an Irish surname derived from the Gaelic Ó Dubhsláine, Dubh meaning black and Slaine for the River Slaine (Slaney). DeLaney is also of Norman origin.

The Delaney Clause is a 1958 amendment to the Food, Drugs, and Cosmetic Act of 1938, named after Congressman James Delaney of New York.
