David William Brewer

Sir David William Brewer CMG JP (born 1940) is the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, appointed by Queen Elizabeth II in May 2008.^[1] He was Lord Mayor of London between 2005 and 2006.^[2]

Early life

Sir David grew up in Hampstead and was educated at St Paul's School, London.^[2] He later studied at the University of Grenoble, France.^[3]

Career

Business

Sir David began his 50-year career with marine insurance company Sedgwick Collins in 1959 ^[3] In 1976 he went to Tokyo to open the Sedgwick Group's Japan office and lived there for 3 years. He set up the Group office in China in 1981 and obtained the first broker's authorisation for Sedgwick in 1993. He also opened their representative office in Mumbai in 1986 and has travelled extensively in Asia and in particular China. He was Non-Executive Vice-Chairman of Marsh Ltd., the company which bought Sedgwick, from 2007-09. In addition, he has been a Director or Consultant for a number of insurance companies around the world.^[4] He is Chairman of the China-Britain Business Council and holds Non-Executive Directorships of LIFFE Administration and Management (2009–present), Tullett Prebon SITICO (China) (2006–present) and the National Bank of Kuwait (International) (2007–present).

Public Service

Sir David has been a Justice of the Peace since 1979.^[2] Prior to serving as Alderman of the Ward of Bassishaw 1996-2010, he was a Common Councilman in the City of London; and was Aldermanic Sheriff of the City in 2002/3 ^[5]. His term of office as Lord Mayor of London was 2005/6,^[2] and since 2008 has been HM's representative in Greater London in his capacity as HM's Lord Lieutenant.^[2]

Public life

He is a Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors and a Liveryman of the Insurers' and Blacksmiths' Companies; he has been President of the London Cornish Association since 2005.

Personal life

Sir David married in 1985 Tessa Jordá,^[6] President of the Chartered Institute of Linguists. They have two daughters (Olivia and Gabriella).^[2] He lists his recreations as music, golf and chocolate.^[7] Another more obscure activity he claims to enjoy is paronomasia or "the use of words that sound similar to other words, but have different meanings – or to be more blunt – puns or punning."^[3]! He is also a member of Marylebone Cricket Club. Sir David and Lady Brewer have a home at Hellandbridge, near Bodmin, in Cornwall.

Knighthood

His knighthood was announced in the New Year Honour's list in 2007.^[8] He is also a Knight of Justice of the Order of St John.

• 2007 – Knight Bachelor: conferred by The Queen at Buckingham Palace.^[9]
• 2007 – Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon (Japan).^[10]

• 2008 – Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Economics), SOAS.^[3]
• 2008 – Honorary Degree, University of Exeter.^[11]
