Darby Township is a township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,622 at the 2000 census. Darby Township is a distinct municipality from the nearby and similarly named Darby Boro.

Geography

Darby Township is located at 39°54′28″N 75°17′21″W / 39.90778°N 75.28917°W / 39.90778; -75.28917 (39.907962, -75.289325)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 1.4 square miles (3.7 km²), of which, 1.4 square miles (3.7 km²) of it is land and 0.70% is water. The township consists of two separate non-contiguous territories.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 9,622 people, 3,670 households, and 2,653 families residing in the township. The population density was 6,739.2 people per square mile (2,598.0/km²). There were 3,868 housing units at an average density of 2,709.1/sq mi (1,044.4/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 62.29% White, 36.35% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,670 households out of which 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% were married couples living together, 21.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% were non-families. 25.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.13.

In the township the population was spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 85.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.5 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $37,396, and the median income for a family was $43,357. Males had a median income of $36,259 versus $29,711 for females. The per capita income for the township was $17,179. About 10.7% of families and 11.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.9% of those under age 18 and 11.8% of those age 65 or over.
