Danske Commodities

Danske Commodities (DC) is a Danish trading company that has activities in a variety of energy sectors such as electricity, gas and climate products in Europe^[1] DC is domiciled in Aarhus, Denmark, and by the end of 2010 there was 60 employees.^[1]

History

DC was founded in 2004 by Henrik Lind and was registered on 23 September 2004.^[2] DC started by trading electricity across the border between Germany and Denmark. The first trade was implemented on 1 November 2004. There were five employees in 2005 and already in 2008, the staff had quadrupled. In 2010, the number of people doubled from 30 to 60.^[1] DC was by the end of 2010 active in more than 19 European countries and provided solutions for 8 various business areas.^[1] Continuously, DC has added resources to existing teams as well as developing new areas of business. Initially, the priority was to act on the ‘Day Ahead’ power trading market but in the summer of 2007 DC started trading on the intraday power trading market as well. In 2009, Gas trading, Financial trading and Wholesale including risk & portfolio management for companies and suppliers were added to DC’s expanding business areas. In 2010 another three business teams were born: Power Solutions, Climate Markets and Emerging Markets. DC was the fastest growing company in Denmark in 2009 and was awarded with the nationally acknowledged Gazelle Award.^[3]

Business areas

DC is organized in eight business teams^[4] and eight support teams. Each business team targets its own market and each support team provides individual service. All teams help each other exploring synergies.

Power trading

Power trading is covered by six teams trading electricity in different ways, timeframes, markets and countries.

Intraday

Intraday trades 24/7 on several European intraday markets and with bilateral trading partners in Europe.

CWE

CWE focuses on the trading opportunities across borders in central and western Europe. The focus is on day-ahead trading, but the team is increasingly active in medium- and long-term trading and trades on the existing electricity exchanges as well as with bilateral trading partners on the OTC market.

Emerging Markets

The team focuses on the immature energy markets of eastern Europe. Trading in Emerging Markets comprises day-ahead, weekly, monthly and yearly trades, primarily through bilateral trading partners and on OTC markets.

Power Solutions

The two most important focus areas for this team are trading at the short end of the forward curve in Germany, France and Switzerland and providing services to support small partners in the German electricity market.

Financial Trading

Power Trading, Financial primarily focuses on trading in Danish electricity futures on the Nord Pool Exchange. The team trades along the entire curve, from daily to yearly contracts. In addition, the team is active on the financial exchanges in Germany and the other Nordic countries.

Wholesale

Wholesale provides services to Danish electricity suppliers and producers. The product portfolio covers handling of the physical buying and selling of electricity on the Nasdaq OMX Commodities, management of electricity suppliers’ consumption balance responsibility, portfolio management and risk management of the customers’ electricity portfolios and calculation of end-customer prices and price hedging.

Gas Trading and Climate Markets

Gas Trading

Danske Commodities is a new player in the European gas markets active in transportation, storage and wholesale trading. The DC gas business is based on a strong international network of partners, profound market knowledge and solid experience in hedging and risk management.

Climate Markets

Our Climate Markets team operates in the European market for climate products based on both national and European legislation. The focus areas are the markets for certificates, allowances, credits and energy savings. Further, Climate Markets manages trading in EUA allowances and CER credits for new and existing customers.

In addition to the above-mentioned business areas, DC has several support functions to assist and back up the business. These include Back and Middle Office, IT, Business Development and Project Management,
