Dab (tribe)

The Dab are a Jatt clan, found in the Punjab province of India and Pakistan.[1]

History and origin

The Dab are a small clan of pastoral Jatts, who have always resided in the Chenab Jhelum Doab. The Dab claim descent from Dab, who was said to be a Suryavanshi Rajput.They came into Punjab around 1469 AD. Many of the Dab's converted to sikhism at this time.

Distribution

In the Pakistan they are found mainly in the Shorkot Tehsil of Jhang District, and their main villages are is Jalala Dab and Dab Kalan.[1]

The village of Kotli Sultan Dab in Khanewal District, is also centre of the tribe. In India they are found in Gurdaspur,Amritsar and Bathinda districts.

Before the partition of India, many Sikh and muslim jat Dab's lived in Jhang and Sialkot districts of West Punjab. Few sikh Dab's come to India after partition making it a rare clan although there are many Muslim Dab jatts still in Pakistan.
