Cruella de Vil (song)

"Cruella de Vil," written by Mel Leven, is a song featured in the 1961 Disney-produced animated film One Hundred and One Dalmatians and performed by Bill Lee as the singing voice of Roger Radcliffe, a character from the movie. It has been re-recorded by Lalaine, Hayden Panettiere, and Selena Gomez for various releases in the Disneymania album series.

Use in One Hundred and One Dalmatians

In the context of the film, it was performed by Roger Radcliffe (singing voice provided by Bill Lee), to describe his wife Anita's schoolmate of the same name. It became Roger's first successful song.

Cover versions

The song was first re-recorded by Dr. John for the 1996 live action remake of the original film.

The song has been re-recorded by Lalaine for Disneymania 3 (2005), by Skye Sweetnam as a bonus track for Disneymania 4 (2006) , by Hayden Panettiere for Disneymania 5 (2007) and by Selena Gomez for Disneymania 6 (2008).

The song has also been covered by The Replacements on producer Hal Willner's Disney tribute album, Stay Awake: Various Interpretations of Music from Vintage Disney Films, and by Los Lobos on their Los Lobos Goes Disney tribute album.

The song was re-recorded in 2008 by Selena Gomez as a promotional single from Disnemania 6. A music video was filmed to promote the 2-Disc Platinum Edition DVD of One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

Music video

A music video for Selena Gomez's version of the song aired on the Disney Channel on February 14 2008. It featured Gomez modeling designs at the House of De Vil fashion house (a reference to the 1996 live-action film), intercut with clips from the movie. The video was included on the One Hundred and One Dalmatians Platinum Edition DVD.
