The fifth season of Criminal Minds premiered on CBS on September 23, 2009 and ended May 26, 2010. Episode 18 was a pilot episode for the spin-off series Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.

While still recovering from the events in "To Hell and Back", Rossi, Morgan, Reid and JJ are called by local police to help profile a killer who's targeting an emergency room doctor and his son, believing that the doctor is responsible for the death of someone the UnSub knew. During the search Prentiss realizes that Hotch is missing and the team eventually discover that the Reaper has attacked Hotch and also taken personal information in regards to Haley and Jack's whereabouts, forcing the two of them to be put into government protection for their own safety. The team must catch him before he kills anyone else. Meanwhile, everyone starts noticing a disturbing change in Hotch who's still recovering after being attacked in his home by the Reaper. Sean Patrick Flanery Guest stars. Based on the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders.

A surprised Morgan becomes the lead in the investigation. Though at first the pressure gets to him, Morgan ultimately discovers that the murderer is a taxidermist with hunting experience. After he is brought to justice, Morgan is promoted to Unit Chief with Hotch stepping down until the Reaper is finally caught. Based on Charles Albright.

The BAU team hunts a serial killer in Los Angeles who preys on his victims in the dark, killing entire families except for one left alive to remember. The episode ends in a cliffhanger when Billy Flynn, the Prince of Darkness (Tim Curry) shoots and kills Detective Matt Spicer (played by Eric Close) before kidnapping his daughter, Ellie and fleeing the scene, leaving both Morgan and Spicer behind. Morgan then passes out seconds later and the scene goes to black with "To Be Continued" showing up on the screen. Notes: Linda Purl, and Robert Davi guest star.
