Early life

Princess Karoline Mathilde was born at Schloss Casel in Casel, Weimar Republic. Her parents were Count Hans of Solms-Baruth and Princess Karoline Mathilde of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. Her maternal grandparents were Friedrich Ferdinand, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and Princess Karoline Mathilde of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg.

Marriage

On 25 January 1942, Viktoria-Louise married her first cousin Prince Friedrich Josias of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the youngest child of Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Princess Victoria Adelaide of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg on Kassel. She and Friedrich Josias divorced on 19 September 1946.[1]

They had one child:

She married, secondly, Richard Whitten on 6 November 1947 at Steinwänd bei Werfen, Austria. They were remarried in a religious ceremony on 14 February 1948 at San Francisco, California.[1]

  • Victoria Astrid Whitten (b. 23 August 1948)
