Background and Foundation
Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Midlands & Affiliated Areas U.K.
In 1991 the first Coptic Orthodox Diocese to be established in the United Kingdom was the Diocese of the Midlands & Affiliated Areas U.K. (Although at the time known as the Diocese of Birmingham). His Holiness Pope Shenouda III appointed His Grace Bishop Missael (who was at the time a General Bishop) to oversee this Diocese. His Grace Bishop Missael oversees the Diocese to this day.
The Diocese is based at St. Mary & St. Mark's Coptic Orthodox Centre in Birmingham where the bishop also resides.

Bishop Missael
H.G. Bishop MissaelBefore becoming Bishop of the Diocese, His Grace Bishop Missael the General Bishop established St. Mary & St. Antony's Coptic Church in 1985 and later established the Coptic Orthodox Centre in Birmingham in 1989. These later formed part of the early Diocese.
On the 26th May 1991, H.G. Bishop Missael was consecrated as Bishop of the Diocese of Birmingham, now known as the Diocese of the Midlands & Affiliated Areas by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III.
The Diocese was the first Diocese under the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate to be established in the United Kingdom. Following its establishment by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, the British Orthodox Church and the Diocese of Ireland, Scotland and North East England and its Affiliated Areas were formed in 1992 and 1995 respectively. The Diocese of the Midlands' bishop was the first Coptic Orthodox Bishop in the United Kingdom.
His Grace Bishop Missael resides at the Coptic Orthodox Centre in Birmingham.
