It was established in 1996 in Cambridge, MA. Syndicated Reports

Since starting with syndicated research in 2007, Cogent Research has released several reports on the US financial industry.

In January 2010, for the third year in a row, Cogent Research released the report Investor Brandscape; a study based on the response from 4,000 affluent investors in US. The report received a lot of press, as it showed, that Fidelity Investment had been displaced as the top distributor and mutual fund provider by key rivals Charles Schwab and Vanguard.[2][3][4][5]

Following the Financial crisis of 2007–2009 Cogent Research released a study, Advisor Brandscape, that showed how the perceived performance of mutual funds differed greatly from the actual performance of certain funds.[6]

Cogent Research has also released a study which found that almost 40% of investors are prepared to roll their assets over into an IRA or retirement account. For the first time, much of this would be done by investing online|online brokerages instead of the traditional full service brokerages. Christy White explained, "Online brokers have spent a lot of time and money encouraging investors to use their rollover services, and it`s working."[7]
