Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities

The Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities is an organization mostly of U.S. universities located in metropolitan areas. The CUMU was founded in 1990.

The Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities in recognition of their shared mission to use the power of their campuses in education, research, and service to enhance the communities in which they are located. Institutions located in metropolitan areas often do not fit the common definition of more traditional colleges and universities.

Mission

Members of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities are focused on fully understanding the distinctiveness of their mission through conferences, a journal, research projects, creation of a policy agenda and regular networking opportunities.

Our institutions serve the diverse needs of our local communities and regions and we continue to remain anchors for our greater metropolitan regions.

Governance

The CUMU Executive Committee is composed of Presidents of member institutions. Executive Committee members are elected to two-year terms during the annual Presidents meeting at the CUMU conference in October.

CUMU Standing Committees are chaired by a member President who serves on the Executive Committee and are elected at the annual CUMU conference to serve two-year terms. Membership on the standing committees is open to member Presidents and Administrators and is a great way to get more involved in the Coalition with a limited time commitment
