Clinical Cancer Research is a peer-reviewed medical journal on clinical oncology published by the American Association for Cancer Research.

History of the journal

Clinical Cancer Research was first published in January 1995 and its mission was to publish original articles describing clinical research on the cellular and molecular characterization, prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of human cancer.[1] Also, part of its mission since then has been to develop an educational function by offering information of interest to basic scientists with clinical interests and to those researchers exploring new therapies.

The AACR decided to publish this journal to respond to the need to unite research exploring clinical applications of the molecular revolution in the understanding of cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, and death.[1] The journal also responded to the need for interdisciplinary collaborations.

By December 1, 1994, 128 manuscripts had been submitted for publication by investigators representing a variety of clinical and laboratory disciplines not only from the United States but also from the international research community. In 1998 the number of manuscripts submitted had risen from 500 in the first year to almost 800. The journal reported an acceptance rate of 52% at that time. With the aim to publish only papers of high quality, the Senior Editors agreed to increase the stringency of review.[2]

There is a lot that we still do not know about cancer and medical technologies have changed the way we look at this disease,[3] therefore, the proposed areas of research for this journal have been helpful to support new research. The areas that were defined at the beginning included subspecialties of clinical oncology including medical and hematological oncology, radiation therapy, pediatric oncology, pathology, surgical oncology, and clinical genetics. The applications of the disciplines of pharmacology, immunology, cell biology, and molecular genetics to intervention in human cancer were also included.

Since its beginnings, Clinical Cancer Research has been focused on publishing innovative clinical research and translational research which bridges the laboratory and the clinic. One of the main interests of Clinical Cancer Research is on clinical trails that evaluate new treatments together with research on pharmacology and molecular alterations or biomarkers that predict response or resistance to treatment.[4] It therefore reports those new studies that can transform research findings into actual clinical interventions in the management of both cancer patients and individuals at risk of developing cancer.

Another priority for Clinical Cancer Research is laboratory and animal studies of new drugs as well as molecule-targeted agents with the potential to lead to clinical trials, and studies of targetable mechanisms of oncogenesis, progression of the malignant phenotype, and metastatic disease.[4]

In 1998 the journal was included in Index Medicus and MEDLINE. That same year, the Institute for Scientific Information selected Clinical Cancer Research for extended coverage in ISI products. Tables of contents are thus indexed in the Science Citation Index and included in SciSearch, Research Alert, and Current Contents. In 1999, the United States National Library of Medicine agreed to index articles back to Volume 1.[2]

Clinical Cancer Research is in the top 25% oncology journals along with the other publications from AACR: Cancer Research, Molecular Cancer Research, Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prenvention, Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, and Cancer Prevention Research.[5]

Editorial board

The publication started with a group of Associate Editors assisted by an Editorial Advisory Board. Besides its members, the Editorial Board has an Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editors, and Senior Editors who provide expertise in the four main categories included in the journal's table of contents which are: Clinical Trials, Molecular Oncology, Markers, Clinical Correlates; Experimental Therapeutics, Preclinical Pharmacology, Cancer Biology, Immunology, and Cytokines.[6]
