A native of Alberta, Roth obtained his B.Sc. (Honours) in Mathematics from Queen's University in 1993, and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Harvard University in 1998 (his advisor was Joseph Harris, and his thesis was titled Calculations on the Moduli Space of Genus Zero Covers) [cite web |url=http://genealogy.impa.br/id.php?id=42400 |title=Michael Andrew Roth at the Mathematics Genealogy Project |accessdate=2008-10-11 |date=2008 ] .

Before undertaking a professorship at Queen's University, Roth spent five years pursuing post-doctoral research at University of Michigan [cite web |url=http://www.math.columbia.edu/~thaddeus/abstracts/roth02.pdf |title=Algebraic Geometry Seminar |accessdate=2008-10-11 |date=2002 ] . A geometer at heart, Roth's main interest is algebraic geometry, especially its interaction with other fields of mathematics such as representation theory, topology, and number theory.

Roth is an advocate of the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition which he wrote while completing his undergraduate degreeFact. In his third year doing so, he would also meet his future department colleague, Gregory G Smith.

Roth has done a number of exchange programs and has given many lectures both in Canada and abroad. In particular, he completed his most recent sabbatical in Italy.
