Japanese aircraft carrier Shimane Maru

"Shimano Maru" was a japanese aircraft carrier completed towards the end of WW2. She never reached operational status due to shortage of planes and fuel. In diferrent publications the ship is also referred to as "aircraft transport ship with flight deck" or "merchant aircraft carrier".

Building

"Shimano Maru" was initialy build as a standard 1TL type tanker but during 1944 she was taken over for conversion to aircraft carrier. She was fitted with a hangar and a single lift and was intended to operate as an escort for conwoys under the command of the Imperial Army (and not by the Imperial Navy).

Fate

"Shimano Maru" was sunk 24.7.1945 by aircraft at Takamatsu. [http://homepage2.nifty.com/nishidah/e/stc0223.htm]
