Mayfield Curling Club

The Mayfield Curling Club is a private curling club located on the grounds of the Mayfield Campus of the Mayfield Sand Ridge Club in South Euclid, Ohio. The club is one of two curling clubs in the Cleveland area, the other being the Cleveland Skating Club in nearby Shaker Heights.

History

Curling began at the Mayfield Curling Club in the spring of 1962 when several curling enthusiasts at the Mayfield Country Club purchased a used portable ice plant, capable of freezing three sheets, and erected an outdoor rink with a warming house. The extremely cold and snowy winter of 1962-1963 convinced the curlers of the need for some permanent cover over the sheets.

In the spring of 1963, the Mayfield Country Club agreed to advance funding for the steel building if the curlers would agree to obtain a sufficient number of members to subscribe to a curling fee which the aggregate would cover the annual operating costs, and additional funds needed to complete the curling facility.

Through growth in curling membership, the curlers fulfilled their commitment to the country club, debentures were written off, and today curling remains a vital contribution to the winter scene at Mayfield Sand Ridge.

Facilities

The Mayfield Curling Club houses three sheets of dedicated curling ice with a wide carpeted walking surface around the perimeter of the ice. The sheets are enclosed by a simple metal structure, with an attached warming house that includes changing rooms and a bar. The Mayfield Curling Club is one of two curling clubs in Ohio with dedicated curling ice, the other being the Bowling Green Curling Club. Larger social events are held at the main clubhouse of the Mayfield Sand Ridge Club.

Membership

Today, the Mayfield Curling Club has about 160 active members, with a growing number of curlers in their 20s and 30s. Not all curling club members are full Mayfield Sand Ridge members. An affordable curling-only club membership is available; its availability contributes to the diversity of club members.

Being a private curling club associated with the Mayfield Sand Ridge Club, membership requires the recommendation of other members and approval by a membership committee.

Events and sessions

The curling season at the Mayfield Curling Club usually extends from late October to the middle of March. The season is broken up into three sub-seasons or "events", each with 12 to 15 sessions such as womens, mens, and mixed. New teams are created each event, allowing members to play on a different team for each event. This arrangement is somewhat different than at many other curling clubs, where a member will remain on the same team for a session throughout the year.
