Alexander Guelman

Alexander Isaakovich Gelman ( _ru. Алекса́ндр (Шу́ня) Исаа́кович Ге́льман, born October 25 1933 in Donduşeni, Bessarabia) — famous Soviet playwright, writer, screenwriter, member Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, publicist, politics.

Early years

Shunya (later renamed to Alexander) Gelman was born in Moldovian village, in the family of Isaac Davydovich (1904—1981) and Manya Shaevna (1910—1942) Gelman. During his childhood, World War II has started and Nazis deported this Jewish family into Bershad ghetto in Transnistria where his mother has died. Then there was "death march" after which only he and his father (from 14 deported members of his family) survived [ [http://ps.1september.ru/1999/24/5-1.htm] ] .

After World War, he lived in Chisinau, worked as locksmith, after study in military college worked as officer, also as a worker on factories and construstions. Hard work made him to abandon high school.

In 1966 he moved to Leningrad, where he worked as a journalist in municipal newspaper "Smena" and "Construction worker". During this period he started learning and working on of the scriptwriting.

In 1970 he co-authored (with his future wife Tatiana Kaleckaya) a screenplay. It was a success, because it was later filmed as "Night shift".

The next screenplay, also together with Tatiana, led to movie "Xenia, wife of Fyodor" (Lenfilm, 1974) that was awarded on USSR-scale competition. 1975 was his star time after filming of his "Premia" ("Salary bonus"). Because of important for the Soviet Union Marxism-related topic of worker's wages, Alexander Gelman was awarded with USSR State Prize.

Also he used this screenplay to create playwright "Journal of the one meeting" that was played in Leningrad Gorky Bolshoi Drama Theater (by Georgy Tovstonogov) and one year later in Moscow Art Theatre (by Oleg Yefremov).

There are too many other playwriths, screenplays and other works authored by Gelman.

Communist party

In 1990, Mikhail Gorbachov has personally recommended Alexander Gelman to become a Member of Central Committee.

Democrat

In 1992-1993, he has actively participated in works of Constitutional convention (most probably Yeltsin's side) that produced current Constitution of Russian Federation. Since 2001 he is a member of Public council of Russian Jewish Congress.
