Carol Woods

Carol Woods

Carol Woods is a Liberal Democrat politician in the United Kingdom. She has been councillor for the Shadforth and Sherburn Ward on Durham City Council since 2003. She has been a member of the Council's Cabinet since May 2003 and has previously held the Environment Portfolio and the Finance Portfolio. She is currently Deputy Leader of Durham City Council and the local party's Parliamentary Spokesperson. She has been a member of the Local Government Association Lib Dem Group Executive since 2005.

In May 2008, in the elections held for the Unitary Authority for County Durham that will replace the County and District Councils, Carol won the Sherburn division seat (along with fellow Lib Dem Maureen Wood) from Labour, overturning a 700 majority.

Ms Woods has stood for Parliament twice in the City of Durham Constituency in both the 2001 and 2005 General Elections, she has finished second on both occasions (although increasing Liberal Democrat support both times) most recently to Labour candidate and (now) MP Roberta Blackman-Woods. At the 2005 General Election the vote share for Carol Woods in Durham increased by 16.9%, the fifth largest increase in the whole of the UK. She was reselected in Summer 2006 to contest the seat for a third time.
