British Indians are London's largest ethnic minority group, with a population of more than 500,000.The largest communities can be found in West London, but also in East, South and North London. Indians can be found in nearly every street of London.The community is well established, Indians in London have the 2nd highest degrees just after the Chinese community.

Most of London's Indian community can trace its ancestry to the Indian states of Punjab and Gujarat, but also to Rajastan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar.A high number of Indians in London came to London from East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda), the Caribbean (Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Guyana) and South Africa (South Africa, Zambia).

Ethnicity

Punjabi

Most of Indians in London are Punjabi. They are mostly Sikhs, but there is a minority of Hindus. Southall is the heart of the Indian Punjabi community. Overall, Punjabis mostly live in West London.

Gujarati

They are London's second largest Indian group. Their religious belief is predominantly Hinduism, but there is a large minority of Muslims. Wembley, Croydon and the North Eastern boroughs of London are the capitols of the Gujarati community.Around a third of the Gujarati community came to London from East Africa or their parents came.

There is a large number of Sindhi Indians in London. They are mostly Hindus. In Southall, there is a high number of Sindhis.

Marathi

Marathis, from the Indian state Maharashtra are highly concentrated all around London. Most of them came to London from Bombay. They are 90% Hindus, there are small minorities of Muslims.

Bengal

Bengali Indians come mostly from the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, and are usually Hindus or Muslims.

Tamil and Telegu

There is a small number of Tamil and Telegu Indians in London. Most of them are Hindus, even though there is a minority of Muslims.

Kannadiga

There is a small number of Kannadiga Indians in London. Most of them are Hindus, there is a sizeble number of Muslims.

Bihari

There is a small number of Biharis in London. They are 75% Hindus and around 20% Muslims.

Religious Groups

Hinduism: The largest Hindu temple outside of India, the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is located in Neasden, London. The number of Hindus in London is around 450,000, of which most are of Indian descent.

Sikhism: London is beside Toronto the largest and wealthiest Sikh community outside of India. Sikhs are UK's most successful ethnic group. They mostly live in West London, Southall is the heart of the community.

Islam: Around 20% of Indians in London are Muslims. They are a very successful community, much wealthier and better established than other Muslim groups in London, like the Somali or Bangladeshi community. They have their headquarter in Tooting in South London. They have strong connections to the Pakistani Muslim community of London. Most of the came from East Africa or Jamaica, but also from Gujarat or Bombay.

Christianity: There is also a small number of Christian Indians in London. Most of them are from the states Kerala and Goa.

Parsi: The Parsi community, which mostly comes from the state of Gujarat or from Bombay, is also a famous Indian community in London.

Indians in West London

In West London, close to the Heathrow airport, resides UK's largest Indian community.Southall is the most famous Punjabi community outside of South Asia. It has a Indian/Pakistani percentage of 75%. Southall Broadway is popular for its Indian shops, cinemas and restaurants. You may not see a single White face if you walk around the street.Most of Southall's residents are Sikhs, the percentage of turban wearing men is very high.A famous Indian residential area is Hounslow. Its residents are well established.Wembley is London's Gujarati capitol. Ealing Road is full of Gujarati shops and jewelleries. Wembley's main religion is Hinduism, although there is a sizable Gujarati Muslim community and a small Sikh community.Harrow ranks number 3 at London's borough in Indian communities. The majority of Indians in Harrow are Hindus.Hillingdon and Hammersmith & Fulham have also rich Indian communities.

Indians in East London

Indians in East London mostly reside in the boroughs of Newham, Redbridge, Greenwich and Waltham Forest. Most of its community are of Hindu faith, there is a large Sikh community and a small Muslim minority.Green Street in East Ham has many Indian shops, although most of the areas residents are Pakistani British.

Indians in South London

South London's Indian community is predominantly concentrated in London's largest borough, Croydon and in Tooting.Most of South London's Indian community is of Hindu faith, there are sizable Muslim and Sikh communities.Tooting in the borough of Wandsworth, is home to a large Gujarati Muslim community. Tooting Broadway is often compared to Southall Broadway in Southall, although its shopping centre is much smaller.In Croydon, Indians take a strong place in society.
