National Highway No. 1 (India)

National Highway No. 1 starts from Amritsar in state of Punjab and goes upto Kolkata in India. The highway is maintained by National Highways Authority of India [ [http://www.nhai.org/ NHAI] ] . The highway originally started from Lahore in Pakistan. The highway is also known as Sher Shah Suri Marg and Grand Trunk Road [ [http://www.nhai.org/nh.asp NHAI] ] . This is one of the longest and oldest highway of India [Grand Trunk Road] .

The present day NH No. 1 or the GT Road passes through Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Panipat, Delhi, Kanpur, Varanasi, Mughal Sarai, Dhanbad, Asansol, Howrah and Kolkatta. Its is the lifeline of Northern India. It is believed that if any vehivle is not crossing the highway for last 3 minutes, It means that the Highway has been blocked or some accident has happened on the highway. It had been upgraded to four lanes a few year back and is now its various sections are being upgraded as six lane sections.
