Code for municipality

Code for municipality

Code for municipality (kommunkod) is a numbercode given to all Swedish municipalities by the Swedish tax authorities. The code is set up by four numbers, the two first the county and the last two for the municipality.

The code system was introduced with the municipality reform of 1952. There was three different types of municipalities at the time, which affected what number they got. Those with stad-status (city/town) got xx80-99, köping got xx60-79 and rural municipalities got xx01-59. The county capital got the number 80 (xx80).

With the reform in th early 1970s was the difference between the municipalities removed, but the code was in most cases preserved. With a merger between several municipalities the code for the biggest municipality was keept. With county mergers, as was the case between Skåne and Västra Götaland.
