An optical instrument measuring the ultraviolet radiation penetrating the atmosphere. Designed by UK researcher,
Gordon Dobson of the Oxford Clarendon Laboratory in the 1930s. About 120 Dobsonmeters have been made, mostly by R&J Beck of London. Today about 50 remain in use. The most famous ones are probably Nos. 37 and 51 with whichJoe Farman of theBritish Antarctic Survey discovered theOzone Hole in 1984. The oldest instrument still in use is No.8 located at the roof of theNorwegian Polar Institute atNy Ålesund ,Svalbard .= References =
