Kidderminster railway station serves the town of
Kidderminster station opened with the extension of the
Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton railwayfrom Worcesterto Stourbridgein 1852by the GWR. The station building, of a mock Tudordesign, survived until 1968when it was demolished owing to the effects of dry rotand replaced by British Railwith the small brick building that stands today.
Severn Valley Railway's southern terminus shares the same station approach road and is known as "Kidderminster Town" to distinguish it from the National Railstation.
There is a car park for 400 cars, administered by London Midland, in part of the old goods yard between the two railway stations. The Severn Valley Railway has its own car park on the town centre side of their station.
Access between the two platforms is at present via the road overbridge, visible in the background of the lower image right.During December 2007 construction works commenced on a new footbridge, which will include lifts providing step-free access to both platforms. The signal box (a short distance to the south of the station) is still known as Kidderminster Junction. This controlled the junction to the Severn Valley Line until its closure in the 1970s. Its junction status has since been restored as it now controls the connection between the National Rail network and the heritage Severn Valley Railway.
Most trains using the station are operated by
London Midland, and these run roughly north-east to Leamington Spavia Stourbridge Junction and Birmingham Snow Hill, and south to Worcester.
The service between Kidderminster and Birmingham is heavily used, with effect from December 2006, four trains per hour during the day time to Birmingham; the service towards Worcester about two trains per hour in the day and one an hour in the evening. There are five
Chiltern Railways' services to Londonin the morning peak times and four returning from London Maryleboneover the evening peak times.
