Somali Politics

Somali Politics have gone through different levels and types of leadership.

Pre-1960

During the early days of Somalia, it was led by Somali Youth League, a group of young educatedmen who worked voluntarily to free their country from colonies.

Post-1960

After succeeding in 1960, following over 17 years of work, with an independence from British and Italian forces, Somalia was officially established. The new government was led by Aden Abdullah Osman Daar , the newly elected President.

The Somali Youth League become a political party which stayed in power and led with Western-style politics. The Italian language was used as the written language of the government however Somali was spoken and widely used (in government).

After the 1967 elections, Abdirashid Ali Shermarke took over from Aden Abdullah Osman Daar, the leader whom he acted Prime Minister as. During the 2 years of work, the Constitution of the country started to become more traditional. Tribes and clannism were more commonly used to award different positions which led to the country's political meltdown which lasts today.

Many people say that if clannism was stopped then, Somalia would be a much more different place. Later in 1969, Abdirashid Ali Shermarke was assassinated by a police officer while he was on a visit to Las Anod, Northern Somalia with his fellow worker, Ali Mahdi Muhammad. The gun shot which killed the President at the time can be described to the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria.

Post-1969

After the death of Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, Somalia began to drown in the sea. People began to conflict and sadness ran the streets. Much of the community questioned closely why a man who led their country as the 2nd official leader was killed in his own land. From the day of Shermarke's death, Sheikh Mukhtar Mohamed Hussein, took control of Somalia for the following 8 days.
