XEPE-AM or San Diego 1700 AM is an English-language talk radio station licensed to Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. Like other such stations, it focuses upon listeners in the San Diego, California area across the international border in the United States.

XEPE originally signed on mid-August 2005 with a [http://www.businesstalkradio.net business talk] format. It carried strictly business talk under the branding "Cash 1700" until August 1, 2007, when the switch to a talk radio format. The programming is mostly conservative talk radio featuring [http://www.marklarson.com/ Mark Larson] , [http://www.raylucia.com Ray Lucia] , Dennis Miller, and Michael Reagan.

XEPE broadcasts at 10,000 watts. The 1700 kHz frequency has de facto clear channel status since the Federal Communications Commission does not allow radio stations in the United States to be licensed above 1690 kHz and Mexico does. (In fact, many stations above 1600 kHz have extended ranges because of a similar phenomenon; the FCC only started handing out those frequencies in the 1980s.) It has been known that XEPE-AM has been picked up at night in Seattle and other western US cities.

XEPE's U.S. programming and sales rights are owned by the same company which operates XEPRS-AM (1090 kHz, XX 1090) / XHPRS-FM (FM 105.7, 105.7 The Walrus), with studios and offices in the San Diego community of La Jolla. San Diego 1700 AM is the flagship station home of nationally syndicated financial talk show host [http://www.raylucia.com Ray Lucia] .

The station has also added some left-leaning "progressive talk" format, hoping to fill in the hole in the San Diego market left by the demise of KLSD. Among the daily shows is one hosted by [http://www.stacytaylor.com Stacy Taylor] , who was the only local host on KLSD before it became a sports radio station. Taylor filled in for Randi Rhodes on Nova M Radio, April 29 and 30, 2008. San Diego 1700 also carries The Lionel Show during the overnight hours.

ports rights

Currently, play-by-play on San Diego 1700 AM consists of the University of San Diego football games, and the Lake Elsinore Storm minor league baseball team. At one time, it aired San Diego State Aztecs basketball (now on KOGO or KLSD), USD basketball games (now on XEPRS), and the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer (now on KLAC and KTLK in Los Angeles). It was also the flagship station of the San Diego Shockwave of the National Indoor Football League until the league suspended operations.

Until XX Sports Radio's FM signal (XHBCE 105.7) started broadcasting, AM 1700 also carried some San Diego Padres games, primarily to cover parts of eastern San Diego County.
