Snell & Wilmer LLP is an American law firm based in Phoenix, Arizona. The firm is the largest in the state of Arizona and the 99th largest in the United States by number of lawyers, according to the National Law Journal's 2007 statistics.

History

Snell & Wilmer was founded in 1938 [ [http://www.martindale.com/Snell-Wilmer-LLP/law-firm-44387.htm Martindale profile] ] by Frank Snell Jr. and Mark Wilmer. During the 1940s and 1950s, Frank Snell was involved in the improvement of the municipal government of Phoenix, seeking legal redress from corrupt public officials and the annexation of more land for the city. During the 1960s, Mark Wilmer represented the state of Arizona in "Arizona v. California", a still-ongoing dispute over water rights to the Colorado River.

The firm began expanding outside Phoenix in the late 1980s, establishing offices first in Tucson, Arizona and Irvine, California, then later into Utah, Colorado, and Nevada. In 2006, Snell & Wilmer absorbed the litigation boutique of Bivens & Nore.
