Russian Strategic Bomber Patrols

*(8/10/07) Guam Flyover: For the first time since the Cold War, a Russian plane squadron consisting of two Tu-95 bombers flew over the US island of Guam in the Pacific. US planes scrambled, but no hostile actions were taken.

*(8/17/07)Bomber Patrols Resume: Russian President Vladamir Putin orders strategic bomber/fighter patrols to resume after 15 years, particularily through neutral international water, continueing to pester NATO member nations such as the United States and Great Britain.

*(2/11/08)US Carrier Flyover: Another pair of Russian bombers overfly the USS Nimitz Carrier, forcing US pilots to intercept. No hostile actions taken.

*(August 07-Present): Alaska Training: Russia continues military pratices with strategic bombers and fighters, particularily over the Aleutian Islands and near US Pacific Bases. Dozens of incidents are recorded, US commanders are worried.

(8/3/07) Russia Lays Artic Territory Claims

On August 3, 2007 Russia subs planted undersea flags at two locations in the Northern Arctic and redrew the boundaries between Russian and International territory. While Canada, the US, Russia, Norway, and Greenland all held ocean territory north of their mainlands, this is the first attempt to take a large area beyond this into neutral territory. The artic is said to hold 25% of the world's unfound oil.
