Menezes, sometimes Meneses, is a common Portuguese and Spanish surname. It has its origins in the marriage of the French crusader Bertrand de Reynel with Elvira Perez de Lara, natural daughter of Queen Urraca of Castile, in the 12th Century. Their grandson, Telo Perez, became 1st Lord of Menezes, a town in Castile (Spain). The family wealth and power grew remarkably along the 13th and 14th Centuries, through several marriages with the Portuguese and Castilian royal families.
