According to the Mahavamsa, Upatissa was purohita to and a Chief government minister under King Vijaya of Sri Lanka. He built a city "Upatissagama" named after himself.

He had 10 sons and a daughter. According to the astrologers the male child of the girl would get the kingdom by slaying his uncles. It happened to be true, Abha became king by defeating his uncles.
