Edward Williams (painter)

Edward Williams (painter)

Edward Williams (1782 - 24 June 1855), was an English landscape painter. He was the son of engraver Edward Williams (1755-) and Mary Ward, daughter of James & Rachael Ward.

Edward Williams was the father of some prominent Victorian painters - his eldest son Edward Charles Williams (1807-1881), second son Henry John Boddington (1811–1865), third son George Augustus Williams (1814-1901), fourth son Arthur Gilbert Frederick Williams (1819-1895) fifth son Sidney Richard Percy (1821-1886) and sixth son Alfred Walter Williams (1824-1905). Some of his sons changed their last name in order to avoid later confusion in ascribing their work.

After his mother, Mary Ward, had run away, Williams was raised and tutored by his mother's brother, James Ward (1769–1859). His work is to be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum and Leeds Art Gallery.

He lived at first in London and later in Barnes and was friendly with the notorious group who accompanied George Morland who had married Anne Ward (1771-1804), another daughter of James & Rachael Ward.
