World record progression 400 metres men

The first world record in the 400 m for men (athletics) was recognised by the International Amateur Athletics Federation, now known as the International Association of Athletics Federations, in 1924. The first officially ratified world record over the similar distance of 440 yards (402.34 metres) was recorded in 1900.

After 1976, the IAAF required fully automatic timing to the hundredth of a second for events 400 metres and under when submitted for record consideration. [ [http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/rsparks/auto-uk.htm U.K. Photo-Finish Data, 1958-1980] . Retrieved 03 June 2008]

Lee Evans' 1968 Olympic gold medal victory was still the fastest recorded time in 1976 and, as it had been electronically recorded, remained the IAAF's official world record until it was broken 12 years later.
