He was recruited by coach Roy Heiner as a talent for his big boat campaigns. After 5 years of big boat sailing Pim moved back again to sail in Olympic classes, this time in the 49er, just missing out on the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Nieuwenhuis started a new Olympic campaign with Mitch Booth in the tornado in 2006.

In the 2006 Tornado World Championship in Buenos Aires they started off with a 14th position, while in the preliminaries before the tournament they finished 4th in the Open South American Championships. With that result in mind they disappointed at the European Championship in Palma de Mallorca where they only finished in 9th position, but they recovered again at the Formula 18 Worlds where they took the silver medal. They started off with a second spot at the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik for the 2008 season. In Hyères at the Semaine Olympique Française they became third, and at the World Championship in Auckland they became sixth. In the meantime they had qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics, which would be their main goal for the year. In preparation for Beijing they finished in fourth position at the Asia Pacific Championships held in Westernport Bay.
