Andh

Andh

The Andh are one of the Scheduled Tribes of India. They seem to have originated in southern India in the vicinity of Madras which was once ruled by the Andhra dynasty. However the identification is only used for the people who by the start of the 20th century had a long history of residence in central India.

In 1911 the Andh numbered 52,000. [http://books.google.com/books?id=nYLfjLj8AGkC&pg=PA38&lpg=PA38&dq=Andh+tribe&source=web&ots=Wx3JXHHufl&sig=PgIf_8a7IVVUeiQ4Z_CYX3reK0E&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result#PPA38,M1]

The Andhs live primarily in the hills of the Andilabad district in Andhra Pradesh. They are further subdivided into the Vertali and the Khaltali. The Vertali consider themselves a superior people and avoid marrying the Khaltali. There were 8228 Andh in Andhra Pradesh in 1991. According to Suresh Singh et. al in their 2004 book "People of India] there are over 74,000 Andhs in Maharashtra. These Andhs speak Marathi. The Andhs are primarily Hindus. There are about 445,000 Andh according to Project Joshua but they put the number of Andh in Maharashtra at over 400,000. Evidently either there are major discrepancies in counting populations or some people include groups as Andh who others consider separate ethnic groups.

About 100,000 Andh speak the Andh language.
