Halo nevus (or Halo naevus, also known as leukoderma acquisitum centrifugum, Sutton's nevus or Sutton's Disease [cite web|url=http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/halo+nevus|title=Halo Nevus - thefreedictionary.com|accessdate=August 4|accessyear=2008] ) is a mole that is surrounded by a depigmented ring or 'halo'.

Causes

Halo nevi are caused when white blood cells target a mole. The cause for the attack is unknown. [cite web|url=http://www.skinsite.com/info_halo_nevus.htm|title=Halo Nevus - skinsite.com|accessdate=August 4|accessyear=2008]

Predilection

Halo nevi are estimated to be present in approximately 1% of the general population, and are found to be more prevalent in people with vitiligo, malignant melanoma [cite web|url=http://www.skinsite.com/info_halo_nevus.htm|title=Halo Nevus - skinsite.com|accessdate=August 4|accessyear=2008] , or Turner syndrome [cite web|url=http://www.emedicine.com/derm/topic174.htm|title=eMedicine.com - Halo Nevis|accessdate=August 4|accessyear=2008] . All races and sexes are equally susceptible to this disease, although a familial tendency has been reported. The average age of onset is 15 years.

Cancer

Halo nevi are entirely benign, and are of only cosmetic significance. However yearly exams by a dermatologist are recommended to ensure there are no other atypical moles or malignant melanoma [cite web|url=http://www.emedicine.com/derm/topic174.htm|title=eMedicine.com - Halo Nevis|accessdate=August 4|accessyear=2008] .

Treatment

As halo nevi are only of cosmetic significance, no treatment is required [cite web|url=http://www.carefair.com/Skincare/Disorders/Halo_Nevus_148.html|title=CareFair.com - Halo Nevis|accessdate=August 4|accessyear=2008] , and patients will be asymptomatic.
