International commission for nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament

The International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament was announced by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on 9 June 2008.

The Commission will be co-chaired by Australia and Japan. Australia nominated former foreign minister Gareth Evans as the Australian co-chair and Japan nominated former foreign minister Yoriko Kawaguchi. Key goals for the Commission include undertaking preparatory work for the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty Review Conference in 2010 including shaping a global consensus in the lead up to the Review Conference. The findings of the Commission are to be presented to an international conference of experts in late 2009 that Australia will sponsor.

The commissioners are yet to be appointed and the Commission has not yet met.
