The Battle of Ballynahinch was fought on 12 June, 1798. It was a battle between the Yeomanry under John and brother
William Bell of theCumber Bridge Yeomanry , in addition to Yeomanry from Monaghan and regular British forces, against the localUnited Irishmen .Result
Although initially winning the battle, the United Irishmen retreated in confusion, and the regrouping British forces routed the rebels. Hundreds of Irish were then killed, while as few as three British soldiers died.
In the aftermath the murder of
Betsy Gray occurred, ensuring her place in legend to this day.External links
