South Wales Miners' Museum

South Wales Miners' Museum

The South Wales Miners' Museum is a museum of the Coal mining industry and the workforce that mined the coal in the South Wales coalfield and the South Wales Valleys.

Location

The South Wales Miners' Museum is located within the Afan Forest Park, near the small town of Cymmer in South Wales. Easy access can be gained by car from junction 40 of the M4 motorway (east of Port Talbot) by following roadsigns for the forest park and Cymmer.

History

The museum, the first of its kind in Wales, opened in the 1970s and was brought about by cooperation between the UK Home Office of the time, Glamorgan County Council and a Community Development Programme instigated in 1971 aimed at redeveloping the Afan Valley as coal mining declined locally. By 1976 the museum has already won a Prince of Wales Award and was becoming a popular and successful visitor attraction.

Facilities & Exhibitions

At the museum there is a Blacksmith's shop, Lamproom, Engine House and pit wheels.

Set within the Afan Forest Park there is also scope for hillwalking, cycling and mountain biking plus there are orienteering events held occasionally.
