Camp Calleva

Camp Calleva

A summer camp run by Calleva, offering outdoor education programs to children age 5-15, and has the largest program of this kind in Central Maryland. It runs for 10 weeks, each week being a session. Campers may sign up for one session at a time and partake in various outdoor programs.

Camp Options

Camp Calleva is divided into several different camps:

Activity Camp

For ages (9-15)
Campers choose one of the following activities to participate in each session:
*Kayaking
*Whitewater rafting
*Horseback riding
*Backpacking
*Mountain Biking
*Caving
*Rock climbing
*Sailing
*Canoeing
*Fishing
*Mountain boarding
*Surfing
*Adventure Island
*Building green
*River ecology

They are instructed in the skills involved in their selected activity, and go to various locations throughout Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia to learn about the outdoors and do their activities. The week culminates in an overnight over Thursday and Friday.

Explorers

For ages (5-9)
Campers spend the day at Riley's Lock learning about the outdoors, doing bite sized versions of the Activity Camp activities and arts and crafts.

For ages (9-15)
Camers do a rotation of the standard activities, doing each one for one day.

LIT (Leadership Training School)

For ages (12-15)
Older and more experienced campers spend a week on a high adventure trip learning about leadership.

Tribes

Calleva is divided into four 'Tribes', in this case each one being a team of campers and staff that compete for points throughout the summer. Each one has a staff leader and different 'founding values'.

Transportation

Calleva uses its network of buses to pick up campers from Washington, D.C. and surrounding suburbs in Maryland and Virginia, and bring them to Riley's Lock. From there, the campers are split up into their respective groups for their activities.
