Greengates

Greengates

Greengates is a small surburban area in the north-east of the city of Bradford, West Yorkshire, in England.

Geography

Greengates is situated on the border of the districts of the cities of Bradford and Leeds.

The area itself is loosely bordered by the villages of Idle and Thackley to the north west, including the large council estate known as Thorpe Edge to the west. To the south of Greengates is the area known as Ravenscliffe with the village of Eccleshill beyond that. To the east is the village of Calverley, which is further towards Leeds. The village of Apperley Bridge lies to the north east.

The area itself is centred on the crossroads of Leeds Road/New Line, and Harrogate Road. Around this crossroads are most of the area's pubs, restaurants and shops, including a large Sainsbury's supermarket. Another notable feature is the large war memorial situated on the crossroads, which commemorates those who died in World War I and World War II from Greengates and the surrounding villages. [cite web

Local government

Greengates is situated in the ward of Idle and Thackley and is represented as part of the constituency of Bradford North. From the next general election it will be represented as part of Bradford East.

Industry

Greengates' proximity to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, which runs through Apperley Bridge to the north of the village, and the River Aire, which runs next to it, has meant that Greengates has several mill-type buildings which now are home to various businesses. One notable example is the Stylo shoe factory on Harrogate Road.

Education

Greengates has its own primary school, called Greengates Primary School, which recently moved out of an older building on Leeds Road to a newer building a couple of hundred yards behind it. The old school building has been transformed into yet more business premises.

Religion

Greengates has a large Anglican church dedicated to St. John the Evangelist on Harrogate Road to the north of the crossroads.
