The Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Alliance

The Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Alliance (PAPAA) is a registered charity based in the United Kingdom (charity number 1118192). The charity was founded in 2007 by founding members of two other charities the Psoriatic Arthropathy Alliance (PAA) and the Psoriasis Support Trust (PST).

The PAA was founded in 1993 by David and Julie Chandler with the aim of providing support to people with psoriatic arthritis, David Chandler has both psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and it was Julie Chandler’s desire to find help and support for David. Since 1995 the PAA has held 11 national conferences and 2 regional events. Publications have included the journal called Skin ‘n’ Bones Connections and the Psoriatic Care Fact File which included an electronic version in 1996.

The PST was setup by Charles Peel in 2001 to assist people with psoriasis, and main efforts of activity were initially centred on the effects of stress on psoriasis with funding of a project at the University of Manchester headed by Professor Christopher Griffiths. The research aimed to use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help manage the condition.

The role and work of both the PAA and PST have been rolled in to PAPAA. PAPAA has an aim to be a principal source of information for people with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in the UK.

PAPAA is independently funded via donations, subscriptions and grants. The charity has a policy of not accepting funds from commercial organisations such as pharmaceutical companies.
