Hard to Handle (song)

Hard to Handle (song)

"Hard to Handle" is a 1968 song originally recorded by Otis Redding and written by Redding, Al Bell and Allen Jones. It was released posthumously after Redding's death in 1967 on the album "The Immortal Otis Redding". Redding's version reached #36 on the Billboard R&B charts and #51 on the pop charts. It has been covered several times, including by Tom Jones and The Grateful Dead, as well as by Mae West in the film Myra Breckinridge. The most notable cover is by The Black Crowes, for whom it was their breakout hit single off their 1990 debut album "Shake Your Money Maker". Two versions of the song exist, the original album version and the hit single remixed with an overdubbed brass section. The Crowes' version reached #1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks and #26 on the Billboard Hot 100.

A cover version is available as downloadable track for the music video game "Rock Band". Another covered version by Steve Ouimette is off of the video game "". The Lemon Jelly song "Rock" features sampled elements of "Hard to Handle".

Masta Ace samples this song's bass line for his "Four Minus Three", a song from his debut album "Take a Look Around".

Rapper Marlon Williams sampled the 5 note ascension & decension intro for his song "The Symphony." This was later re-sampled in Snoop Dogg's song Ghetto Symphony{ref:www-rcf.usc.edu/~usclrev/pdf/077203.pdf}.
