The Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) has the responsibility for protecting the citizens and property of Milwaukee from fire and fire hazards and providing emergency medical services.[1]

The Milwaukee Fire Department consists of approximately 1000 firefighters, many of whom also serve as paramedics providing basic and advanced life support services.[1] The department was ranked third in the U.S. for best medical emergency service by a USA Today study in 2003.[2]

Former Fire Chief Douglas A. Holton resigned from the force in November 2009.[3] As of May 2010, the department is under the leadership of Chief Mark Rohlfing.[4]
