Hubdub is a web-based prediction market in which players use virtual money to trade predictions on future events. Over time users build up a portfolio of live predictions across their chosen categories of interest such as politics, sport, entertainment, technology or other categories. Each player's performance is tracked allowing them to compete on leader boards which demonstrate their knowledge and expertise in their chosen category.

Background

Hubdub launched at the [http://www.demo.com DEMO 08] technology conference on January, 28th 2008. [ [http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=7708 ZDNet, Between The Lines, January 28th, 2008] ] [ [http://news.smh.com.au/technology/hubdub-website-virtual-betting-on-news-20080129-1ou8.html Sydney Morning Herald, January 29th, 2008] ] Politics and sports tend to be the most active categories followed by technology and entertainment. Hubdub has a largely US audience base which is evidenced by its mainly US news content.

PunditWatch

On June 4th 2008, Hubdub launched PunditWatch which is a feature which tracks major pundits from technology, politics and entertainment. [ [http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/digitalcontent/2008/06/hubdub_keeps_track_of_the_pund.html The Guardian, June 6th, 2008] ] Pundits include TechCrunch, Henry Blodget's Silicon Alley Insider, Pat Buchanan and Perez Hilton. Every time the pundit makes a public prediction it is logged using a shadow account on the Hubdub prediction. The performance of each of the pundit's predictions is then tracked over time and the pundit's overall accuracy derived. Commentators such as the Wall Street Journal have described the concept as good but the execution flawed.
