This is a timeline of history.

BC

*c. 40,000 BC-20,000 BC: People of the Vedo-Australoid type arrives from the north and west.
*c. 3000 BC: Second migration brings Melanesians.

1500s

*1556: A group of Dominican friars establishes the village of Lifau.

1600s

Portugal started a trade route with east timor

1700s

*1702: The territory officially becomes a Portuguese colony, known as Portuguese Timor.
*1767: Capital is moved to Dili.

1800s

*1859: The border between Portuguese Timor and the Dutch East Indies is formally decided.

1900s

*1910-12: A Timorese rebellion is quashed after Portugal brings troops from its colonies in Mozambique and Macau, resulting in the deaths of 3,000 East Timorese.
*1913: The Portuguese and Dutch formally agree to split the island between them.
*1916: Definitive border drawn by the Hague.
*1941: Portuguese Timor is occupied by Australian and Dutch forces.

1970s

*1974: Carnation Revolution installs new government.
*1975: Indonesia invades East Timor.
*1976: Indonesia declares East Timor its 27th province.

1990s

*1991: Santa Cruz massacre- Pro-independence demonstrators in the Santa Cruz cemetery are shot.
*1996: Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo and José Ramos-Horta, for their ongoing efforts to peacefully end the occupation.
*1999: East Timor Special Autonomy Referendum results in 78.5% in favor of independence.
*1999: International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) arrive to address humanitarian and security crisis.

2000s

*2002: East Timor becomes an independent nation.
